G-50 Tranny Fluid
I have searched the archives here and really did get the info I was looking for. With a non-LSD G-50 tranny what is the
Redline fluid that works best ? Thanks, CHuck |

Mobil 1 full synthetic 75W-90 works great in a G50, hot and cold, shifts fabulous. I don't see why redline would be better in any way.

I searched for "redline g50" and got you some more information. Some people like mobil 1, some like redline. I've already stated my opinion. The first one answers your question directly.
Which Red Line Fluid? G50 transmission, What gear oil should I use? G50 gear oil REDLINE GEAR LUBE I think there were more results but you get the idea.

Make sure the Redline you choose has the proper API GL-5 rating. Most have the GL-4 rating.

I use the Redline "blend" 1Qt 75W80 and the rest 75W90NS. Yes, they are GL-5. So far (~2k miles) I like it.

bad...no. but it's definitely not the best for the G50. I had a G50 that the PO had swepco in, and I switched to Mobil 1 75w-90. shifting improved in all respects, at all temperatures, particularly when cold. However, I don't believe that the G50 was harmed in any way by the swepco. My 915 has swepco, and the shifting sort of sucks when cold, but people say something like mobil 1 doesn't have enough friction for the synchros on a 915. _lots_ of information on this on the board, including the threads I posted above. search for "G50 swepco" and you'll get plenty.

Most any brand of the proper grade new fluid is going to do you some good. As far as the regular 75W90 vs. the 75W90 NS fluid? I was told by the tech. guy from Redline that the Porsche LSDs do not experience chatter like most other units, so you don't necessarily need the 75W90 that has the friction modifier in it. The 75W90 NS does not have the friction modifier.

SHC Mobil 1 (found in 5 gallon buckets ONLY) is the oil that you want to use. Mobil 1 found in small containers is different. Redline 75/90 is OK, but not nearly as popular among the "Pros".

Thanks guys, I guess it helps to do a GOOD search and use the proper
search terms. The GL-4/GL-5 get confusing and all the mixing for LSD Looks like the GL-5 75/90 is the ticket. Thanks Again ! CHuck |

Porsche actually worked with Mobil in the formulation of the Mobil 1 SHC blend, which is used by 90% of today's pro teams. The G96 series transmission (for GT3R cars) has pretty much the same working internals as the G50 series.

edit to avoid bumping this: I read a post from a mobil tech on an oil BBS saying that the _only_ difference between the M1 SHC gear oil and the small container stuff is that the small container stuff already has a limited slip additive. The SHC would need a LS additive before it should be used with a friction LSD. of course you could tune how much you added. the big disadvantage of the SHC is that the smallest size is 5 gallons.
