How difficult is Clutch Replacement in Early 911

Curious how difficult people believe a clutch replacement is for an early 72 911.

I have done valve adjustments, installed carerra chain tensioners, and a bunch of other jobs over the past 3 years.

If I take my time how long to folks think it will take?

Thanks.

pretty easy

drop engine+tranny

remove starter
split tranny from engine

clutch will come out

then put the new one back in

you will need a clutch alignement tool to get it back in

pretty straightforward

i had to put mine in after the winter works, never had done any work on cars prior to the project.. and i got mine in in an hour or so

it's a bit fidling with the arm when you put the tranny and the engine back together , but that's a handyness that you'll figure out easely...

it will take 1 day the 1st time

rotate both axles as you slide the trans onto the engine

use a tiny amt of lube on the gears

torque clutch bolts in about 3 steps and use a cresscross pattern

As long as you are comfortable and able to remove the engine and tranny from the car, it is not a difficult job or require much in the way of special tools..

Good luck..

Except, then you see a bunch of other things you want to do. Like fix that annoying oil leak at the top front of the motor that you've been meaning to get to. Oh, and there's that sound pad that's been dropping that you might as well replace while you've got the motor down. Not to mention the CIS hoses that look cracked. Well since you're there you might as well...

See how it goes :-)

And that quick-to-leak sending unit on the back of the engine which is not accessible when the engine is in the car.... and couldn' t the flywheel use a quick sweep....etc.

no need to remove the trans. just disconnect the shift coupler, remove the lower release arm, and slide the engine off it.

I suppose you could leave the trans in the car. Saves taking the shift linkage and the CV joints off . But JW, has lifts and things to hold the motor up while he gets in between. This is not a job for a car on jack stands. I'd take the engine and trans out together if at home on stands.

It's a couple more steps, but you're not on a flat rate. Sorry, John, but that's the way I see it.
