87 911Carrera quits running

I have a 87 Carrera that has a hot running problem. You can drive it 10 times hot and have no problem. Then out of the blue, the car will just cut out like the ignition was shut off. If you crank it over to restart it, blue smoke pours out of the tailpipe. Does not even fire. It will sit for 5 to 20 minutes, then restart like nothing ever happened. Both times this has happened, I have had no tools with me so I don't know if it's lacking fuel or spark. Thought I would put up this post because it's probably a deal that someone has seen before.

Is the oil tank overfilled? DME relay?

The conventional wisdom on DME relays is not IF they will fail, but only WHEN they will fail. If yours hasn't been replaced yet, order two from our host. Install one, and put the other in the glove box as a spare. There's a good chance swapping out the relay will solve your problem...and it's a good and inexpensive place to start!

Oil fill is suspect. The gauge is pegged when hot, but only on the upper line of the dip stick. Not over. I like to see it between the two marks, so I am going to drain out a quart.
DME replay was my first guess. I'll give it a try and re test drive for a while. Be back.....Thanks

Rick, It sounds like your Cylinder Head Temperature sensor is going out. I had the same problem.

Electrical suspects as the others have said: DME relay and CHT sensor. Top line on your dipstick is overfilled! Should be halfway between the two marks.

Well, at least we know you are DEFINITELY overfilled by about a qt. DME relay is probably the real problem. If your head temp sensor is original, get the updated one.

Thanks guys,
Kurt, as I said above, I also like to see it between the 2 marks.
The DME relay, and the CHT sensor are so cheap that I am just going to replace them both. It's cheaper than spending any amount of time doing tests on all electrical componants. If those two bits don't do the trick, THEN I will put my thinking cap on......
Thanks again........

Rick, the space between the two tick marks on the dipstick represents about 2 qts. of oil. So exactly halfway between the two is where you want to be.
