Question about 72 oil system

ok, something I never realized. The oil filter housing has a thermostat built internally, along with the bypass parts. I know the one on the engine sent oil through the cooler, but what is the one on the filter for if the car didnt have an external cooler? And those of you who have a 72 with a cooler up front, are you running another t-stat in line, or runing the cooler in series into the factory lines?

The version of the filter mount for cars without a front cooler had a cap/plug instead of the thermostat assembly. There was a mystery pic and question posted several months ago ... it was the 911T version without thermostat.

Early S man is correct; there are two consoles shown for the '72 manual tranny cars, the one for cars without coolers has a flat plate cap off on it. both are 916 part #s (guess why).

You can remove the cap, have the cavity machined out so that the I.D. is the same all the way to the bottom, then pop in a T-stat that is the same as the one in the engine.

Then remove the plug from the third outlet of the console in the inner fenderwell, and install in it's place the same fitting that is on the side of the case for the scavenge line. Run a line from that fitting up to the cooler, then rune a return line from the cooler t the blocked-off fitting on the bottom of the '72 oil tank, and you're done!

If you want pics, I might be able to take some tomorrow.

Thanks guys!
Pics would be great, but geez, wouldnt it just be easier to run a seperate t-stat in series with a front cooler?

O.K., I just took some pics of the oil filter/t-stat console in the inner fenderwell, and some of the bottom of the oil tank. I'll have my buddy post them when he gets home.

Tomorrow I'll try to find a modified console that's not in a car and has the t-stat out so you can see what it looks like with the bore opened up.

I'm pretty sure that if you just take your oil filter console and aan engine t-stat to a machinist, he will be able to figure out how deep to bore it. The diameter is a no-brainer, since the top of the hole is already the right size, you just need to continue that diameter all the way down the bore.

On the back side, ther are two oil line fittings, and a plug. Remove the plug, and replace it with a fitting like the other two. It's the same fitting that you'll find on the left side of an engine case for the scavenge line. Run a 90 deg. fitting off of that, and run that hose to the cooler. The return from the cooler just goes into the bottom of the tank. there's a fitting there too, with a plug. Just remove the cap plug and attach the hose there. Done. It's pretty simple.

Tyson,

Did you ever get a chance to finish those photos? Any kind of simple illustration of this to make it a little clearer for those of us not in Porsche rich So. Cal?

Tyson's method really isn't that hard.

Adding an external thermost (mocal etc) is a pain because you need to find a place to locate it and route 4 new hoses. Figure $100 each for the 4 custom hoses plus the cost of the external thermosts. It's unweildy and fugly.

Modifying the factory console starts sounding like an affordable solution, plus it is a very clean install.
