how different can ignition coils be between years?

I'd think that a coil is pretty much a coil, but there appears to be some difference since our host has them from $65 to $395 dollars for the early turbos. The blue bosch one that MSD recommends is only 35 bucks. Can anyone explain the differences?

usually its just the price. If you get a different brand that costs more; then, -sometimes- you'll get a little more performance out of the coil over a stock bosch...sometimes.

bump- it's been another busy Monday:)

not as well as Warren..

Try searching Early_S_Man & coil.

The windings are different. What ignition box are you running?

THIS NEEDS REPEATING, because some folks don't listen the first time...;)

Thanks Ronin. I had searched on 'coil' but adding Early S Man really zeroed it in. I've got a lot of reading to do. This guy Warren is hard-core!!!

We're very lucky to have him.

Generally, a coil is a coil is a coil!

Coils become more critical with inductive discharge ignitions vs capacitive
discharge ignitions. In both cases the turns ratio, i.e. the output voltage,
is a key parameter. If it's too high, it overstresses the wires, cap & rotor.
If it's too low, misfires will occur. The coil's inductance, i.e. the size (amount
of iron), is generally not a factor for a capacitive discharge.

Check out this web site ( www.systemsc.com ) on the Technical page under
Ignition Systems for more info.
