What should I build?

I had a lot of fun restoring my 84 but I want to go the performance route and can't justify stripping this nice car and dealing with the California smog issues.

I am thinking of buying a cheap (ha!) 74 or earlier (Calif exempt) and remove all the heavy stuff and build a motor possibly a turbo (size under investigation) . I would want to add flares etc. Is there a particular year (s) I should look for if I decide to jump in to this? This would be street only. Suggestions?

Lost of choices Paul a 3.2 is a nice engine to go the promotive route if you want a turbo. If you go the 74 route i,m not sure the 2.7 engine would be the best choice to turbo it so a 3.6 or a 930 engine would be an option.
Either way it will cost big $$ but who cares anyway
A Carrera is no collectable (yet) and the promotive kit is reversable if you ever decide to sell.

Paul, I don't know what to tell you, but I really like your '84. It looks like a great CA cruiser, especially since it's a Targa and has white interior and those sexy Fuchs. Whatever you decide to do, don't let go of that beautiful Targa.

I chose a '73 to start with. Why? Found it cheap.

I chose '87 running gear. Why? Found it cheap.

I would probably keep my Carrera after all the work I did or give it to the wife. I don't want to strip this car. I get compliments everywhere I take it. I built a modified twin plug 914-6 years ago that slammed you in the seat at 100mph and I really miss that performance. My Carrera is a dog in comparison and will never have that performance without significant motor work and the smog issues that will come with it.

I wouldn't mind doing a turbo 3.2+ in a early car that was light, no AC, rear seats etc. Anyone have an early basket case they want to let go?
