Jdub's got it right - keep everything clean.

I also second the recommendation for Chuck's Elephant Racing products.

My '76 Coupe runs one of Chuck's "Widemouth" Carrera coolers, which has an electric fan and is fully boxed in at the back (to force air through the cooler) and is ducted at the front, underneath the car. I've only once run the fan to help keep temps low (stuck in bumper to bumper city traffic in 98-100ºF ambient temps) and even then, the temps never got over 205ºF.

I also run Seine Systems' HeetSheets and an 11-blade fan. Even on hard driving along mountain roads in summer, this thing is super-cool. Usually, I see temps of between 80-85ºC (175-185ºF).

I see that you won the 28-tube cooler on Ebay from last night - I think that you will be quite happy and much cooler running once it is installed (I did pay $0.50 less than you when I purchased mine several weeks ago!!!). With some 'never-dull', you can polish that unit up to the point of where you want to mount it on your wall instead of hidden away on the fenderwell. I have just completed the 'not-so-straight-forward' installation of this same cooler so please ask if any questions should arise.

From memory (this was months ago) but what the hay,

- remove air cleaner and mass flow meter as a unit to allow access to back of motor
- remove air conditioning compressor and move out of the way
- from underneath, remove the big s-line from the cooler (you did drain the oil, right!)
- remove the engine tin from the side of the motor and the right side of the oil cooler.
- remove oil cooler cover from top of oil cooler. This was difficult as there are several hard-to-reach bolts... also, as I recall something else was blocking full removal of this part which had to be taken off, but I can't remember what is was anymore....
- get a long extension, remove the two bottom nuts from the oil cooler
- from the top, remove the two top nuts from the oil cooler
- pull the cooler straight out with a catch bucket underneath
- to clean, plug up cooler with paper towels. Get a $2 can of carb cleaner, and with the cooler over a catch pan, spray, spray, spray until it's degunked.
- assembly reverse of above and be sure to use new rubber seals for the cooler.
While you are in there, change out the oil pressure switch and oil cooler oring. It's not easy, you will need a mirror, but it will be an additional 1-2 hours to do this.
- I would really recommend buying a Bentleys. This oil cooler part is very well detailed there.
