Long overdue story about great emergency service and customer satisfaction (Long)
I have a long overdue story about great work and exceptional service that I would like to share. As some of you may know, I compete in an event called the One Lap of America (www.onelapofamerica.com) which is a grueling, week long, thousands of miles (5800 this year) event that takes it’s competitors across the country competing on different tracks each day. There are no support vehicles allowed, so competitors must carry any spares they think they might need. As one might imagine, a mechanical failure in Middle America thousands of miles from home can spell disaster for one’s competitive aspirations as well as their wallet.
Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened to my co-driver and me this year. And it happened at the worst possible time, a Saturday morning. On my first run at Heartland Park on May 1st, I lost 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear. Who’s going to work on a ’79 930 in Kansas on a Saturday when we have to be in Colorado Springs the next day? After what seemed like 1000 phone calls we located Roger Brown at PowerHaus II (www.porschegears.com) in Boulder, CO. (Not to be confused with the recently maligned Powerhaus business in Arizona.) He said he had all the parts, and, more importantly, he would ask his guys to come out on a Sunday to rebuild our gearbox. This was great news, because Colorado was on the way West so we had a chance to remain competitive if we didn’t lose too much time. Keith (my co-driver) and I loaded the car onto a rented trailer and drove overnight to Boulder and had the motor disconnected by the time Scott and Stan (the Powerhaus II rebuild team) arrived to begin the rebuild. They helped us finish the engine drop, and then went to work like men possessed to fix that gearbox. Did I mention that this was a beautiful SUNDAY spring morning in Boulder? They were up to their elbows in gear oil rebuilding our gearbox on a Sunday. By 2:30 the gearbox was finished and by 5 PM they had helped us reinstall the package and we were on our way. Now at this point you might be thinking – “That’s a swell story Dave, those guys at PowerHaus II really went the extra mile.” The story however doesn’t end there. During the test drive an ever so slight whine was detected at the far linkage travel for third gear. Stan determined that this was mechanically insignificant, and it would be no problem continuing out trip. Roger said that once we got home, if things didn’t quiet down, we could simply send it back and he would take care of the whole thing. The gearbox performed flawlessly and we finished the One Lap in Second place in our class (not bad for missing 5 scoring events). When I got home I called Roger about the 3rd gear whine. He said, “Let me know when it is ready to go and I’ll take care of the whole thing.” And take care of it he did. I removed the gearbox, made a shipping frame and called Roger. Literally within hours Bax Global picked up the package and it was on its way to Boulder. It was sent 2 day air in both directions and they turned it around in a day. Basically they had my problem taken care of door to door in less than a week. Cost to me $0.00. So the moral of the story is: when it absolutely positively has to be rebuilt overnight, with a satisfaction guarantee you may want to call PowerHaus II. Thanks to PowerHaus II and thanks for reading this. If you are interested, you can read about our entire One Lap adventure here: http://www.autobahnperformance.com/motorsports-article-0504.htm Dave |

While I have never needed their services, the guys there are TOP NOTCH! They have spent a lot of time with me discussing shorter gears and the pro's and con's of them. Glad to hear that they are even more professional than I thought.
