| early 911 right side mirror
any suggestions or guidance on what is available, new or used, for a right side mirror on a '73 911. I am finding that my judgement of where the side of the garage door is as I back in has become quite poor, and I'm concerned about swapping paint with the side of the fender and garage door jamb. I thought that right side mirrors were never an option, but thought I saw some listed in a parts book. My guess that they are aftermarket. I would like to keep the original look. Anyone out there got any info?

I was going to update and put 2 of the newer mirrors on my 73.5 a few years ago. Never got around to it and am now glad I left it orginial. I think the '72's and '73's will become more popular as time goes on and it's important to leave them as they came if it's not too late....Just one opinion.....

Hey, I know what you mean, but this one has had some mods already so it isn't quite totally original. Plus I look at this 'mod' as an effort to 'preserve' the right side. thanks for your thought! Joe

In countries where the driver sits in the right hand seat, Porsche installed the round durant mirror on the right door on the '72 models. I'm not sure if the same was done in '73? Maybe one of our Brit and/or Oz posters could chime in...

My race car is built from an Aussie delivered 70 911T and I'm pretty sure it has the stock mirror - see pics (sorry couldn't find anything close up)

RS mirrors

Thanks Ryan (and pwd72s), Great pics. I forgot about right hand drivers. I was thinking in terms of the small rectangular type, but the round has kind of a classic/retro look. Does the round mirror mount the same way as the small rectangular (two bolt holes)? Any other suggestions welcome! Joe PS. How did you get the factory jack to hold up the car that way? I could never get mine to work THAT good? Just kidding! Last edited by joepfs; 09-22-2004 at 06:31 PM..

yep, mounts the same way. just remember that the 'non-drivers side' mirror is positioned further rearward than the drivers side. have a look at some dual mirror cars from the factory as to the jump - i can still hear the sway bar mount ripping off...

My '72 911 have a aftermarket right side mirror. Is the rectangular one. If you want to install it first you will need to measure the distance that the book give you to drill the holes in the right side. If you use the left side distance measure, then drill the holes in the right side with the same measures you can't see into me mirror because it will be fitted in a blind spot.

Ryan, Thanks for the info. The right side mounting info is well understood. It's burned into my brain 'measure twice-drill once' Joe

I buy the right side mirror from Performance Products. They are the only auto parts that I found after a big search that have the right side mirror. I will try to take some picture to post it.

I bought the Performance rectangular mirror, took one look at the amatuerish crimping job around the actual mirror, and shipped it back. The quality control is a know issue. Hopefully Nitro got a good one or quality has improved from 3 months ago.

I brought the mirro 4 years ago and It still looking good. Maybe you are right that I have been lucky with the quality. I think that the quality in the mirror details are variable, I can't tell you if I'm correct, but like Rick say, he got one with poor quality crimping job and I get one with good quality crimping job. Joe, if you think that quality is an issue don't buy the mirror, or buy one, check it, and if you like it, keep it. If not, return it to the store. Nitro

I found a NOS OE one from PAR on eBay a few weeks ago. I have not installed it on my 73 track car as I found the wide angle mirror I clamped over my rear view mirror does a great job at the track.

mirror

appreciate that info. I will search 911 parts for mirrors. I have the wide angle mirror attached to my rear view mirror, but it doesn't give me a sight line along the right side as I back up. I'm beginning to think this has become a choice between a second mirror ( and drilling holes) and the possible cost of right side repairs from the garage door. I'm sounding more like the 'old man'- ugh! Appreciate all the comments. Joe

Get the rectangular aluminium mirror for the 73; the round durant mirrors are off earlier cars (that’s if you want to keep it stock). I think Pelican has both types for sale. The reproduction durant mirror which they sell, and what you can now only get from Porsche (Australia thats is) are junk too. Might be better to go to a wreaker and getting a proper one.

I haven't read this whole thread, but there are two sizes of the chrome rectangle mirrors. One is for the 73 (and 72?) cars, and the slightly larger one was used on the 74-75 cars. There used to be a guy in Australia who made replicas of the 73 mirrors, which worked for the passenger side of LHD cars. Performance, etc. (Pelican can get them too, I'd bet) sell the larger one. It has inconsistent build quality, and has gone through long stretches of being backordered. I've used both, and the larger ones are -- in my opinion -- the ones to get. The 73 model is so small as to be almost useless, on the passenger side especially. I got rid of my small ones, and currently have a factory 74-75 driver's side model, and a factory (I'm pretty sure) passenger side one. Gratuitous mirror shot:

I wouldn't do it. I'd stay original. Your garage can be fixed with a convex or domed mirror to allow you visibility with out drilling into the car.
