Another RS project. Mine part 2

Well, I just got my car from the bodyshop yesterday and im in the process of putting back together. I have mastered the rattle can. I think. I have been painting all those little parts that I did not powdercoat with a rattle can. I discovered that it is all in the prep. I did sandlast alot of the parts but did not have to do them all. A little sanding with different grades of sandpaper did the job on the little stuff. Anyway, its getting there. I never planned on doing a groung up restoration, but thats the way it goes. You take off one thing , then you dont think that the surounding peices will look good with the undesturbed peice left alone. It is a 30 years plus car so peices get dirty or get suface rust on them. BTW its a track car not concourse so the paint is not perfect but passable. Next is to rewire the car. I carefully labeled everything and covered it all with a trash bag. Luckily I have a couple of days off.

rattlsnak 08-12-2004 06:40 PM

What is the paint code for that? (your car specifically) It looks an awful lot like Gelb Green.

KobaltBlau 08-12-2004 07:02 PM

Gelb green is yellower (hence the name). That sure looks like viper green to me.

adomakin 08-12-2004 10:27 PM

nice paint. how have the wheels been finished? is that the rough anodised treatment?

The Chef 08-12-2004 10:53 PM

Thanks guys! Its been a loooong project. Its nice to see it come together at this stage. Well, I finished rewiring the car and I also finished installing all the gages as well as the dash. I got rid of the crappy carbon look that I put in a while back. Too ricey for an early car. I cant begin to amagine the crap I would have gotten on the board!

Anyway, I painted all the gages, ashtray, dash, and any sourounding trim pieces that needed it.

When putting back the wiring harness, Tyson suggested cleaning The wires with rubbing alchohol to get all the 30 plus years of dirt and oil off. Worked like a charm!

Chuck Mooreland,
The gas tank was degreased with castrol(purple bottle) degreaser(about 4 times), Then wipped with a wet cloth. Then I painted the bottom black and the top grey with rustoleum paint. BTW i also used some por15 along the edges for some surface rust that I had. It came out awsome. I am proud of that one.

I am also proud of the way the dash came out. Pretty close to concourse for a race car.

Tommorrow! Who knows? I have lots of little things to do. I have to say that I will never do it again. As much as I enjoy it, it seems to consume too much of my day. God Bless you Kevin P from Automotive Innovations and Restorations and TRE motorsport. If I had the $$$ I would have let you guys finish the project. Thanks for all the help along the way.

DBeyers, The Oval Room is another story.

Thanks Ray, Your car looks awsome too. I saw your pics and felt every muscle ack with every picture of the work you did. The results are great though.

Yes the car is viper green. The color code on the car is 225. It may be my camera in the garage the makes it look wierd.

AKA: "La r'ana aleman"

Great looking project.

Shuie 08-13-2004 03:52 AM

Very nice work. Thats going to be a great car. Any details on the oil light thats in place of the clock? Ive been thinking of using that space for some kind of dummy light telling me to shut the car off if something catastrophic like a broken fan belt or loss of oil pressure ever happens.

dickster 08-13-2004 05:09 AM

very nice - great colour :)

}{arlequin 08-13-2004 06:03 AM

I love it. That looks so good. Makes me wish I had the time to take mine apart and give it some nice paint.

Chuck Moreland 08-13-2004 08:00 AM

Aren't you glad you decided to paint the trunk body color?

It's looking sharp.

German autofest is looking very doable.

Joseph, very nice!
Thanks for posting the pics too, I am working on removing un-needed weight from the car, and pics like these help a lot.
Your car already looks good, let alone until the finished job- good luck!

Yes I am! I can actually see the wiring harness and all the other goodies in the trunk. I am going to put the new front suspension in this weekend. Then i will finsh the wiring, plug in the juice and see how many fuses i pop and go from there. I did label everything before i took it apart but some of the labels came off.

Man i hate putting all the components back knowing that im just adding unwanted wieght. Do we actually need wipers in southern cali! Anyway, here is a shot of the nice and clean engine bay.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1092421275.jpg

The Chef 08-13-2004 10:24 AM

P.S.

Thanks for all the great comment guys. Its been a long year and its nice to finally see it come together.

Randy Webb 08-13-2004 12:24 PM

I think you'll find that paint doesn't stick to the pot metal that recieves the rubber seal. No biggie.

Also, you _could_ put in a 944 wiper/motor assy. for driver only - Jim Calzia did that in his light wt. car.

The Chef 08-13-2004 01:00 PM

Randy,
Anything is better than what I had. Its a cheap paint job but at least its all one color. Good paint was not in my budget. If was, I would have brought it to Kevin P at automotive restorations. Anyway its a track car. It just has to look good from 30 feet away and traveling...

The Chef 08-13-2004 10:27 PM

OK
I decided to tackle the front suspension tonite. I couldnt stand to see that 914 front suspension on the car anymore. Thank you Dave B from TREMOTORSPORT.COM for the use of it while my car was gettig painted. Also thank You Kevin p for the use of the 914 wheels.

Luckily Tyson Schmidt is in NY picking up his new 69 or he would not let me work on my car. Its more his baby than mine. With that said I was able to figure out the best way to do it. I think!

Step1
Assemble rack to cross member. Properly torque and use blue locktight. I greased the tortion bars and put them in the control arms. I had to tap in the cotrol arm to the cross member because i had the arms powdercoated. More for protection than looks.

Step2
I didnt want to scratch anything so i assembled everything on cardboard and slid it under the car. I proped up one side and started bolting up the other side leaving all bolt loose til everything was boltedup. Then I tightened everything up.

step3
install struts.

Well thats about as far as I got tonite.

loving your work joseph!

mjshira 08-14-2004 05:17 PM

Joseph

Tyson and I are here in NYC recovering from hangovers, last night we had a bunch of guys out talking Porsche until late in the night. The ride looks good! I look forward to seeing your car in person!

James

The Chef 08-15-2004 10:01 AM

Thanks James. I talked to Tyson on Friday. Sounded like he was enjoying the NY weather. I would have went if I had the time. NY is my home town and thats my neck of the woods. I was hanging out in Hells Kitchen when it was Hells Kitchen. You had to fight your way into a bar and fight your way out. Now that all the Yuppies moved in they renamed it "Clinton".

Randy Webb 08-15-2004 12:43 PM

"Hells Kitchen when it was Hells Kitchen. fight ... bar ..."

So it's actually O'herreros ??

-- just joking -- ti was notorious Irish slum in the 1800's

The Chef 08-15-2004 03:16 PM

Thats how I remember Mr. O'webb. It was actually affordable by NY stadards to live there about 10 years ago. A 2 bedroom went for about 1200.00 a month. 1500sq ft . Those were the days! Prostitutes walking the streets, drug dealers on the corner, and not a cop in site! I dont miss one bit of it. You guys can keep it all!

I marked every corner Years ago! Squirt, squirt:)

The Chef 08-15-2004 07:34 PM

Its sunday and I just finished the front suspension. Cleaned evertything that neede cleaning and painted what was needed.I had to make a bracket for the horns. The stock ones must have wieght 5 pounds. I cleaned up the lights and housings and assembled them. I also cleaned up some of the overspray in the wheel weels where it was noticeable

The tie rod ends took me some time. I wanted to measure the exact center of the steering, then insert the tie rods into the spindles. I did an alaignment by eye for now untill i can get it to the shop. looks pretty good. I also centered the steering wheel.

So I go and put the front wheels on and after give the wheels a spin. MMM, very tight and making sharp grinding noises. Then i dawned on me that my spindle were raised and the ball joint hits the bottom of the wheel. No big deal because it not going anywhere. 17 wheels are on the way.

I finished off by putting on the front grill pieces, porsche emblem, and a few little things. I have to say that I am liking the way that it is starting to look. Anyway that was the prgress for the day.

Tomorrow is the alaignment of the front bumper and the wiring in the rear of the car.

Here is a couple of pics. Enjoy!

Looking at these pictures here is the best motivation for me to go look for a better job :) I must move to CA and build me a nice early 911 and actually get to drive it - unlike in Philly where this summer had been nothing but rain, humid and ... more rain. And then Fall will come and...
Oh well, GREAT car and GREAT color!!! My fav for sure :P

speeder 08-16-2004 10:54 AM

Wow, looks great! You are doing a fantastic job of cleaning things up as you reassemble. That is the way that I like to do it as well, then drive it and enjoy it w/ regular old washings. It'll stay nice for a long time. Nice work!
