Cool Highest Repair Bill????

For grins whether you would like to admit or not since most of us are DIYers. Just curious short of totaling a car due to a wreck ,who holds the highest Repar bill from a wrench. Should be a fun thread. John

20 years, 1 million miles of driving mostly old Porsches and BMWs -the most I've ever paid to a wrench . . . . around $500.

I gave $6500 to Andial for an engine rebuild on a 2.7 in the mid 80's. There was no way I was going to try it myself at that time. I had painted the car myself and done a few things mechanical, but the motor intimidated me beyond confidence. Even after doing Chevys. I wish I knew then what I know now, don't we all.

What do you think they would charge for the same COMPLETE motor rebuild now including the new P/C's? $8000? $9000?

Incidentally, I sold the car for $6800 in '96. I'll say it again, I wish I knew then what I know now.

About 5 years ago I was in Andial trying to get a really bad stumble/miss diagnosed and there was a 993 on the rack with a turbo motor that caught my eye. I joked that they could just swap that engine for mine. He commented that I might not like the bill for the work being done on the other car. I pressed him a bit and he said the bill for just the modifications they were performing was over $60K. GAAK!

"Speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?" For $60K in mods I would want to make sure that the paint stays on the car when you pass the sound barrier.

I think they are quoting around $12K for that rebuild these days.

$135 for an alignment. And while my car was on the clock the guy was on the phone for half the time booking other appointments.
