Requesting info from Yok. ES 100 users

Specifically, I'd like info from SC and Carrera owners on any clearance issues at front tires. I've been using Kumho 712's, 225x50 on the front, with just adequate clearance, and am considering changing to Yok. AVS ES100's. The Yok's are slightly wider (for a given size) than the Kumho's so I'm concerned about clearance at the front fenders. Is there any clearance "advantage" to using 225x45's instead of 225x50's? Any other advice or info appreciated.

BTW, I'm currently using Kumho 712's, 225x50 fronts, 245x45 rears, on 7" and 8" x 16" Fuchs.

Thanks,

I wrote down some of the different tire widths in this size the other day. According to the data at tirerack, the AVS ES100's and Dunlop SP8000's have the smallest overall width I saw when I was looking for 225-50-16 tires. Here are the widths for some of the tires I was looking at in this size:

Yoko AVSES100 - 8.9"
Dunlop SP8000 - 8.9"
Yoko AVS Sport - 9.1"
Goodyear Eagle F1-GS-D3 - 9.1"
Dunlop SP Sport 9000 - 9.2"
Kumho 712 - 9.2"
SO3 - 9.3"
BF Goodrich G-Force KDW - 9.4"

I run 205-55-15 AVSES100s on 7" Fuchs and they are not the narrowest tires out there in that size. The SP8000 has been a consistently narrow tire in the few different sizes I have looked at. Trouble is, every Dunlop shop I call says the SP8000s are no longer produced.

I dont have a SC or a Carrera, but Im becoming a student of shoving max tire under limited flare space. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response, Sherman, but you're quoting "section" width not "tread" width. The tread width on a 225x50 ES100 is actually .3" wider than on a Kumho 712. That's why I'm concerned about clearance.

I have an 84 at Euro height with ES 100's on 7" wheels w/205's and had to roll the fender lips. I would not want to go any wider.

I think the ES100 is typically a wider tire because of the tread design. This tire has a much more "squared-off" shoulder than most other tires. Such a design then keeps the tread up higher on the tire than those tires with a rounded shoulder design, thus creating a wider tread width.

I'm sure there is an advantage to the 225/45-16 as far as clearance is concerned. The 45 series tire is one inch shorter in overall diameter. Therefore the car will sit one half inch lower and the top of the tire will be one half inch further below the fender lip, when compared to the 25 in. tall 225/50-16 tire.

My car is sitting at 25-1/4 rear and 25-3/4 in front. I had no problems with 205/55-16 ES100 tires on 16x7 wheels (+23.3mm o/s), but they looked close. Even with shaved fender lips. Camber was pretty much zero though. I increased the front camber to -1.0 deg and I have no clearance problems with 255/40-17 rear tires on 8.5 in. wheels (+15mm o/s) and 225/45-17 front tires on 7.5 in. wheels (+30mm o/s).

Here's a picture of the 205/55-16 on a 7in., +23.3mm phone dial wheel ('86 944T wheel)

Thanks KTL. I'm using about 1.5 neg. camber and the fender lips are rolled, no clearance problems with the 712's but the ES100's are .3" wider. I know it's not much, and really only .15" will be to the outside, I'm just looking for anyone who has the Yok's who has had a problem.

Jerry,

THe problem with handbuilt cars is that they are all different. What combo rubs for one may not for another. You may just have to try it and see. Worst case senerio is that you raise the front end slightly.
