Dead Starter???
My starter ( '84 Carrera) quit during a recent trip - just clicked and the lights went dim. I gave teh starter a couple raps with a hammer and all was well for the trip and a couple of weeks, at which point I removed the starter, disassembled, inspected, cleaned, and lubed it. everything was in nice shape, although I couldn't get the solnoid apart.
It worked well until tonight - same symptoms; and a whack got it working. Only for one start, though. Obviously I can buy a new starter, but I am puzzled about the root cause, and whether it is repairable.

I had the same problem, you could replace the solenoid as it is probaly cooked from the heat of the exhaust, but that is only buying you some time. i put in a gear reduction instead as it is smaller and further from the exhaust, it also has a cool sound and spins the motor fast.
Good luck
