How far should the AAR open up???

After chasing cold start problems for many months, I am now starting to remove each CIS item one at a time to inspect it. I took off the Auxiliary Air Valve today to check it out. Threw it in the freezer for quite a while and it was still only half way open. Should it be fully shut when the engine is warmed up? How far should it be open:

At freezing?

At room temp(say 80-85 degrees)?

When engine is warmed up?

Thanks for your help.

The AAR should definitely be fully closed when the car is warmed up. Mine is maybe 1/3 open at 70 degrees.

Hooked up the multimeter and got 33 ohms across the element. I think that is what it should be. Hooked it up to a hot lead and watched it go fully shut in about five minutes. So the AAR seems to be working OK. I'm thinking there has to be a big air leak somewhere in the cold start circuit. The AAR is open when the engine is cold, but I'm not getting the increased idle when I first start the engine. Next guess??

The mix is too rich during warmup? Check your cold pressures to see if they are in spec.

Here's a good AAR thread

I agree w/ kstylianos. It might be mixture related or WUR.

Is it also possible that in Aug in Fl you won't get an increased idle @ startup?
