915 transmission linkage problems??

Hello transmission experts,

I had a rebuilt transmission installed in my 85 Carrera about two years ago. Recently it has started to make slight grinding sounds when shifting to second or third gear above 2500 rpm. Below this rpm all shifts are fine. It also tends to stick in fifth gear when trying to downshift. With the car parked and engine off, all gears shift well except fifth. It's a bit sticky and you can hear and feel a metal on metal rubbing sound when engaging it. The sound appears to be coming from right beneath the shifter. You can also hear a snapping sound when it's disengaged it from fifth.

Am I experiencing a combination of internal (syncros) and external (linkage) problems or could this just be an issue with the linkage?

Why not start by inspecting the linkage a) the ball onthe bottom of the shifter, b) the coupling to the tranny. Both wear out. Both are easy to fix.

101 Projects tells how to replace the bushings on linkage, not to hard. Read on the PP technical site for a slightly more helpful description on adusting the linkage.

I would also do the linkage first. It is easier and cheaper to do that. Just be mentally prepared for the next step, which is to inspect the synchros.....

The linkage bushings run like $26 from our host, and can be installed in a short afternoon of work. I inspected mine to discover that they weren't only brittle, but one was missing! I recommend you check yours before opening the tranny.

If you do have to open the tranny, you'll start with the easy stuff -- draining the fluid and looking for strange material or bits of metal, then opening the bottom access plate to poke around with your fingers for internal oddities.

Seems like there ought to be another step before opening the tranny, though. Shift linkage alignment, maybe?

Seems like it. But.... "you can hear and feel a metal on metal rubbing sound when engaging it."

That is the sound of the coins in your pocket getting restless and rubbing their little selves together. Soon they will make a break for freedom and wind up in their new home in someone else's pocket....

What brand and weight gear oil are you using in the 915 ... and has it been changed in the past two years???

Contaminated gear oil [wear products after rebuild] can cause difficulties with the 1 - 2 shift, and fresh gear oil can often cause the 'graunchy' shift to go away, and get smooth and quiet!

How are your motor mounts? Mine were shot and when I replaced them my shifting smoothed considerably. Just a thought...
