tranny/clutch replacement or how scared should i be

uhhh i hate bringing this up but if im gonna sit down and drop the tranny out and replace the clutch, about how many man hours it that gonna take?

Also the reason i ask is yesterday i hear this clicking from the rear part of the car, i slow down, and its still there speed up and its still there. The clicking noise was dependent on the speed of the car and note the RPM's.So at first i thought it would be something like a blown wheel bearing and stuff, no big deal. But then i realized that the sound goes away when i coast in nuetral or i have the clutch pressed in... So now im starting to get scared.... If it is im gonna be in bad shape because living on a military post right now doesn't afford me the best in garages, and the cash just isnt there to pay a mechanic

Tell me I'm crazy and everything is gonna be all right

Garage
Just ignore it and it will go away. :>)

Seriously, it might not be that bad. Clicking sounds from the rear are normally CV joints. The rear wheel bearings will make more of a groaning sound.

Get underneath the car and take a look at things and see what you find. My dad was all ready to take his Subaru to the dealer last month because of some horrible screeching noise coming from the front brakes. I convinced him to jack it up and take the wheel off and it ended up being a small piece of gravel trapped between the rotor and the dust shield.

Good luck...

Mike

Mike is right -- it sounds kind of like CVs, imho. Those are pretty easy. You just need an allen socket in the right size and a torque wrench. I wouldn't figure more than a good Saturday for that, and I'm slow.

Monterey, in the military? Is that Naval Post-grad School?

If you have a helper who has been around Porsche, the 84-911 clutch and flywheel and TO bearing can be changed in 1 long day. That is if you do not do anything else along the line of ... while I am in there.

Note, there are always something to do while you are in there.
