Colorado Pelican Party 9/1/04
There will be a Pelican Porsche Party and unofficial PCA party in the Pike National
Forrest just across US-285 from Kenosha Campground on Wednesday afternoon/evening, September 1, 2004. The site is at the summit of Kenosha Pass on US-285 (to the left as you are traveling west.) I’ll put a Pelican sign on 285. If you get to the South Park Overlook on the left (which is worth the view) you have gone ¼ mi too far. The campsite is 53 mi. from Hampden and Broadway. The purpose is to greet Pelican Rufblackbird on his cross country odyssey in a ’72 widebody 911. He is traveling from Maryland to San Diego and then up the PCH to Washington. You can follow his progress at: East to West Coast Roadtrip!!!! Captain's Log Any announcements or changes will be posted on that Pelican thread. Many will camp overnight. The campground is at 10,001’, bring your parkas.” Andy, Pelican KobaltBlau, is going to help me load and unload gear. Monday, I went up and inspected the camp site and confirmed with the Forrest Service. It is a great site, smooth Forrest Service road (0.2 mi.), bathrooms, parking, etc. From the intersection where the bathrooms are, our campsite is 500’ straight ahead in the “Dispersed Camping” area. I’m going to provide beef stew and/or pork green chili for supper and a quick breakfast. Please let me know how much to make. Supper will be about 7:00 PM. Sunset is about 7:30. There is always the possibility that Rufblackbird could have some mechanical or other issue that would affect his timetable. The Pelican thread is the best way to keep that posted. Best, Grady ![]() ![]() |

Mmm, this looks doable and a break from the routine, even though it is in the middle of the week. Count me in as a tentative.. But I might be late (dang kid's soccer practice)

Dang it! I have to be at a nephew's wedding in Iowa, and we're leaving Wednesday about 5am.
That area is beautiful, and the drive up on 285 is a fun one too. Can you post some pictures of your get-together? Maybe next time, Jeff

Grady told me he will be out getting stuff most of the day, but if anyone has questions or needs more detail I can try to answer them.
BTW, thanks for the ride last weekend, Bill!

I think I should be able to make it and would love to meet some of the locals. I'm visiting my in-laws this week in Boulder. For the family drive we took the wagon, so I'm Porsche-less here. Let me know if somebody is driving up from Boulder and maybe has a passenger seat available. Otherwise, I should be able to make it by 7 pm.

Harold,
Great, we can swap lies at the Ventura Porsche Fest also. Don’t worry about the wagon; I’m driving Karen’s old Land Cruiser up there. I think Mike O’Neal needs a ride from Boulder, perhaps you guys can connect. SweetE, No problem. I just want you to drive carefully back down 285. Pelican road kill is not permitted. In addition to my mild green chili, I have some Brewery Bar II green chili – best in Colorado. I’ll post more in a bit. Best, Grady

I think I will bring my tent and sleeping bag. The rendezvous should not be dampened by driving home in the dark, running on good chili and such... This willl make for an interesting Thursday morning commute too. Hopefully it will not be raining as I only have some ancient track tires (A008Rs) on the '72.
See you guys up there.

The premier Denver Porsche speed shop in the 70's and 80's was Grady Clay's Rennenhaus.
At the "Grady Clay School of Sideways Driving" many of us learned important lifetime driving skills at Aspen's Woody Creek race track . Recently I discovered Grady's sharing of his vast Porsche wisdom and knowledge of early and mid 911/914-6 here on the Pelican board. I haven't seen you in 20 years Grady, and look forward to seeing you tomorrow. Your post and Pelican Porsche Party brings me out of lurking mode. I will be coming from my cabin adjacent to the Lost Park Wilderness, about 20 minutes from the Kenosha site. You'll know me as I drive in, I'll be driving the same 911 Rennenhaus serviced some 30 years ago.

Sorry I missed you all. Got to find a better way to live. This having to work really messes with the fun.
