CONTACT THE GOVERNOR
Below is the contact information for the governor's office. Now would be a very good time to write a letter, (mail delivered letter's have the most impact) send a fax, send an email, and or call his office. I would recommend that you contact his office in the capitol, and the nearest branch office.
If you want to be taken seriously, please consider the following: don't curse or use abusive language, include your name and home address, mention that you are a registered voter;, politely and briefly explain your opposition to the bill; include a phrase like "veto AB2683" in the subject or title of your message, and send it soon! This is not a good reason to oppose the bill (in your letter at least). "I have a 1976 and I want to put headers and carburators on it and throw the catalyst in the trash." Here are some good reasons: *The bill will disproportionately impact the poor. *The bill is unfair to collectors of old cars who drive limited miles and keep the cars in excellent condition. *The bill breaks the deal that was made when the last emissions law was passed. It is wrong for the democrats in the legislature to promise a 30 year rolling exemption as part of a deal to get legislation passed and then break their promise and eliminate the exemption at the first opportunity. This is sneaky politics at its worst. *The statistics used to justify this bill are nonsense. They ignore the fact that older cars have a very high rate of attrition. They also ignore the fact that the few old cars that do remain on the road are collector cars that aren't driven much and are well maintained. Ignoring these facts allows them to inflate the future impact of emissions from these cars. From the Mercury News article...
"Bonnie Holmes-Gen, a spokeswoman for the American Lung Association, said the public health should come first. Besides, if these collector cars are kept in such wonderful condition as their owners say, then they should pass the smog check with flying colors.'' That's got to be one of the dumbest things I've read lately, and I spend a fair amount of time on the OT board here ![]() It would be nice if it was just about passing the sniff test, but you can get failed just for not having all the original stuff on the car. Bonnie should STFU and stick to cigaretts and stuff she knows.

Now in 993 land ...

I sent in mine and sent email to every car buddy I have. I realized that in the governor mail form at http://www.govmail.ca.gov , there is a pull down menu for the subject. Bill 2683 is second on the list. It is *real* easy to "vote" that way. Don't forget to write a few lines. But more importantly, write, if you oppose the change. I think it is a VERY good sign that the bill is on the subject pull down menu. This means many people write in about it.
Also have your friends and family send messages if they oppose the bill. Cheers, George |

i sent mine just now!
i also offered an alternative..tell me what you guys think... "AS AN ALTERNATIVE: if veto is impossible at the very least, allow cars 30 years or older a higher smog output (eliminating those cars that are truly poorly maintained, i am after all, not a smog mongrel) and also eliminate unfair visual inspections for those cars." my reasoning goes: im not after dirty air to breath for our children. i would like to eliminate the truly poorly maintained. (you've seen the ones on our highways spewing a thick cloud of smog, although those are usually mid 80's clunkers anyway...hmmm..) if we were allowed slightly higher emissions (our smog technology is, afterall older) and eliminate visual inspections..which never made sense to me anyway. i dont see most of our cars with sport exhausts and the like failing emissions then! CMON GUYS! send your in if you havent already! dont put it off! and tell your gf's, wives and moms! ![]()

I noted in my email that many of us support LOCAL economies including mechanics, parts suppliers, and specialty manufacturing. And our hobby in fact helps support such industries.
