Can I add an AC vent?

Here is a picture from "seat level on the drivers side" in my 77 911 of the "HVAC Box" on the firewall.

Can I drill a 2 1/2" hole in the air box without damaging anything inside? I'll then run an AC hose to a vent that will be mounted on top of the console. This is a "home made" attempt to get better air flow than provided by the stock vent system.

Thanks,

Jay

I recall something about an oversize vent that might do the same thing. Maybe someone can recall the details.

I think that will work.

BTW what is that seam? Was this area modded by you or a PO?

Let us know how it works out.

Paul,

As far as I know, the seam is "stock". I'm the second owner and the original owner had nothing done to the car. It only has about 37,000 miles on it.

Jay,

I have the bulkhead vent that David shows in his link. It goes in that area. It came w/ the car so I don't know what it costs. It works fine. You may get away w/ your low cost variation just fine. You just won't have the directability of the vent.

Paul,

Does the vent mount right on the "air box" under the dash? Do you have a picture?

Thanks,

Jay

Jay,

I don't have a pic, but the vent sits on the face of the box, just below the seam. I just noticed I have one too. When looking at it from the seat, the centerline of the vent is about 1/2" to the left of the right edge of the console.

Thanks Paul. I've ordered a vent that should screw right to the box as long as I cut the holes correctly!

Regards,

Jay
