Question a welder would ask.
Well, last night as I continued stripping my car, I noticed a couple rot spots on my left side rocker. Correct me if i am wrong but the metal that is under the rocker panal (thing with long rubber strip)from the front wheel to the rear wheel is the rocker. Anyways, I was fine with that but then I discovered a rot hole the size of a nickel on the frame next to, towards the front, jack stand holder. Well, I suppose I need to have this address first before the car splits in half so off to find a welder. Anyways, whenever I have talked to welders before, they have always asked what the frame is made of, which leads me here. The car is a 77 911. Is it just steal or is there a more technical term? While I am asking what are the fenders made of?
Any welders on the southshore of MA that want to barter services? As always I am in a constant struggle to keep cost down below wife radar. Thanks, David |

Everything should be galvanized steel - including the fenders (unless someone replaced them with fiberglass). Gage (thickness) will often vary from structural parts (rails, rockers, wheel houses, etc) to cosmetic panels (fenders, door skins, etc).
If replacement parts can't be used (new or used), a general guideline is to make patch panels from 20-22 gage for cosmetic panels and 18-20 gage for the structural parts - depends on the size and complexity of the area to be patched.
