Desperate part II

I have the sunroof cables pulled, just one question on my mind now...The cables are covered in some sort of gunk, im not sure if this is somehow lubricating them or if it is infact slowing them up.

QUESTION: Should I cleanse the cables entirely with soap and water? Or leave the gunk on them?

I'd clean them up as good as you can and the lube with something that dries slippery but not sticky. I like Boeshield T-9 and use that for all sorts of things like this.
