stealth V1 install for your 993
What do you have to do for a V1 stealth/remote install? Take it apart and wires the sensors into the front and rear of the car?

RoninLB 08-27-2004 11:18 AM

Laser jammers are available. Nat'l Motorist Ass tested the M-10 last yr.

I was cruzin up HWY 101 in Nor Cal and my V1 lit up (one of several saves) with the indicator pointing rear. I slowed my clip from 75+ to 60 as the tone started getting more solid. Watching in the rear view, the CHP drove by, giving me 'the look' and then kept going. I followed him for 20 miles and watched my V1 as he switched on his radar when cars approached from the opposite direction. Some of the other CHP just leave theirs on constantly while cruising, but a number do the on and off thing. Even with a V1, you still have to watch for the Off and On flippers. The things one learns sitting 6 hours behind the wheel on the way to Oregon.

Anthony - I doubt that the the V1 will owrk if you separate the sensors. My bet is that would mess up the timing of the arrival of the front vs. rear microwave beams. Sine the freq. is high, the processor has little time to compare phase lags or time differentials. Just a guess.

A question for you Ontario speeders. What is the penalty for getting caught with a radar detector up there? I just drove RI to MI and back through Canada with a V1, I just quickly unpluged it and slowed down for a few minutes whenever it would go off. I know that the OPP have radar detector detectors, but I reasoned that the V1 is sensative enough that unplugging it at first beep or when I saw an OPP car would make it almost impossible for them to figure out who had the detector. I have been using this technique in Ontario for years and have never been stopped. What do you guys from the Great White North do?

anthony 08-27-2004 03:56 PM

I was just wondering. Since it has front/rear/side detectors I was figuring that it had separate sensors. I've seen a Bel taken apart for a remote install but never a V1.

masraum 08-27-2004 04:31 PM

The V1 has only front and rear sensors and uses some sort of algorithm to determine if the signal is to the side.

The V1 stealth install usually consists of having the radar detector mounted someplace permanently, and then having the stealth control panel mounted someplace else. This results in the main screen being dark.

According to the V1 website, the V1 does not emit anything that can be detected by detector detectors, if memory serves correctly.

That's good to know. I won't risk a stroke trying to get the plug out asap next time I traverse Ontario. :D I'd still like to know, what are the consequences for getting caught with one up there?

photo radar

Here in Washington we now have photo radar. A camera at the side of the road with a radar gun attached. If the radar gun detects you are over the limit, the camera takes a picture of your license plate and sends you the ticket in the mail. They got me.
I heard they tried this in Maine and the locals kept shooting the cameras out. Authorities gave up. Should I get a gun?

Colin, Yep they are sooo sneaky here (Live in Sacto). The "no light bar" cars are really hard to see except if you look for black or white Crown Vics in your rear view that have push bars on the front of them. The Camaros with the 2" light bar are another one that will really sneak up on you. Looks like a ski rack from a distance in your mirror! Forget about the BMW bikes with "officer upright" on them they are deadly quick.

"Don't flash!" Freakin' jerk. What, is he writing his own laws now? If a citation was issued for flashing, I'd definitely go to court.

WA has a few nasty little surprises too. The state has authorized funding for completely arbitrary and completely unmarked cars, to be known as Aggressive Driver Units (ADU). So far, I haven't seen anyone getting pulled over by a ricer -- it's usually bigger vehicles, like a Ford Explorer or a Chevy Suburban. They still carry the telltales, and there's a fifth sense that'll make your hackles go up when they're nearby: look for big rubber, extra antennae, slightly out-of-place bull bars, "wrong" tinting, extra-precise driving style,

Dan, what model scanner do you use/recommend?

That white Z28 Camaro with the woman CHP officer drives me nuts. It is very hard to pick out until she's right behind you. She's been prowling the Yolo Causeway.

This is the remote display unit. The main unit stays dark when using this remote. Another $30 on top of the original 399 investment.

masraum 08-28-2004 05:53 PM

and the remote display unit is not part of the power supply, but it will snap onto the power supply. You can mount it anywhere. Just wanted to clear that up just in case anyone might make that mistaken assumption.

anthony 08-28-2004 07:09 PM

For me the major annoyance with radar detectors has always been having to take it apart and carry it with you or hide it in the car somewhere every time you get out of the car. I'd love to do a remote/hidden install.

well, I hope the V1 is as good as folks say 'cause my girlfriend just got me one for my birthday. I know that Tyson saved a couple tickets with one on the way back to LA from NY. Since I have to make that trip in reverse I am glad to have the added security. Are there certain states that you are not allowed to use them in?
