rebuild costs?

Being new to this, I wanted to get a sense for what a typical 100,000 mile rebuild ought to cost for both a mid-70's and a mid-80's 911. What issues typically need attended to at this level of mileage?

The ones I see that I can afford, I expect are about ready for engine work, and wanted to budget properly. Thanks for any guideance!

Tom

Depends on the model. a 100K SC could still be fine. A carrera possibly valve guides but also could just need routine maint.

I spent around 1K on my first service with my SC, which included valve adjust, trannie bushing adjust, etc.

Top end rebuild around 5K full engine rebuild 7-10K

Buy Wayne's book. You know who Wayne is, right? If not, look at the banner at the top of the page, if it's not there, look at Pelican's site for the engine book. 30 bucks will answer ALL your questions. You'll even be able to do it yourself!

Now, ask now much it will cost. A lot less.

actually, Milt should have said books. Get 101 projects for a lay of the land, and the engine book for motor specifics.

Get Bruce Anderson's '911 Performane Handbook' also. There is a good section in there about engine rebuilds. Read each book a few times. You will have a lot of options if you decide to rebuild.

At 100,000 miles most mid 70's cars have had all the problems fixed with the 2.7 heat issues or had a transplant like mine. The SC's should be good for another 100,000 as long as the previous owners had a good maintenance routine. There are some fixes like a pop off valve & oil fed tensioners that should be addressed on the 78-83 cars.
You should find a soild car that doesn't need any major engine work and make sure you get a Pre Purchase Inspection (PPI) when you find the One.
I got a little lucky and didn't do the PPI but had all the receipts from the 3.2 install on until I bought mine. With the help of this site and the search function I learned what to look for and the questions to ask.
Good luck on your search for a car, I've had a blast working on and driving mine.

$4000 to $9000 depending on what is bad, upgrades, how much you do yourself, etc.

Thanks, guys. Appreciate the guidance. Looking at the books, but the posts got me headed in the right direction.

Like some of the others said... it depends...

If you get a car with a 2.7L engine, you may be north of $10,000 to properly address the issues.

If you get an SC or Carrerra (3.0 or 3.2 L engine), you may be facing a top end from worn valve guides. If you have someone do this for you, figure $3-5,000.

Your best bet is to find a car that has this type of work already done (and documented).

What about rebuild costs for a 1989 930 turbo w/ 150K miles?
Would the top end still be $5K and total $10K? How about new turbo?

thanks
mike
