The "ultimate" custom gauge install thread

Post pics of the custom installs for additional gauges that you and your sneaky big brains have concocted.

Carry on.

I like the tac, except I prefer the traditional black to the white faces.

Porschekid962 08-27-2004 01:35 PM

cant get any closeup pics of it but in excellence a while ago there was an adriatic blue 914 with a 993 engine swap and was done by patrick motorsports. there is a sheet metal shifter tunnel with gauges mounted in it, i though it looked pretty neat and clean. there are some shots of it in the gallery of the patrick motorsports site.

More TRE work. Since I no longer need the slot to hold CD's, I'm thinking of adding two more gauges, some day. Maybe CHT and wideband A/F.

Normally, the Hotlap display isn't there, and the ash tray is in place, covering the fire pull.

Zeke 08-27-2004 04:20 PM

Wrong model car, but good gauges :D

here a cht guage where the clock was......i need to find a solid piece of glass (from an oil press guage) so i can get rid of the annoying hole in the center :D
surrounding the guage are super bright leds, yellow for charge and red for oil pressure. they are all slaved off the stock lamps in the other guage.....but i can see these reguardless of where the sun is :)

i know this is the wrong make and model of car, but I always thought it would be fun to try to put a heads up display in a car like the corvettes offered.

I'd pay up for a nicely made and finished two or three-gauge A-pillar pod. I would like to add some gauges but I use my clock, the center console is teeny, and under the knee bar isn't the most visible location - plus I need the room for, like, my knees.

rdane 08-27-2004 07:54 PM

More of NH Speedo's work...easy to read with a 350cm wheel and no gimmics.

Picture posting isn't working at the moment, but I have VDO head temp sensor and volt gauges mounted under the ashtray. My tach is the same as Danes, but without the red/green. I have a simple piece of orange tape for redline.

Tom

rdane 08-27-2004 09:10 PM

Anyone know of a VDO head temp that would fit the clock hole?

ScottKelly911 08-27-2004 10:12 PM

how much does something like that cost?

Overpaid Slacker/JP is presently involved in installing a 3 gauge single unit into the clock hole.. it's very cool.

KTL 08-28-2004 06:51 AM

Here's my cheesy setup made with some sheet steel (sorry, Al was too thick and spendy for my 2 in. hole saw and circ. saw blade), some Al. angle to mount it in stock ashtray mouting holes, and the volt, CHT VDO gauges.

Can't post pics for some reason either. I'll add a post later when it's fixed.

The one I have is smaller, but I don't think it would be that difficult to fab a spacer plate.

when i get in there to change the glass (may add a light tint to it) i'm going to fully surround the guage with more leds......brighter is better :)

i've got an extra digital air/fuel guage i want to take apart and incorperate it in somewhere too :D

emcon5 08-28-2004 09:29 PM

Well, photo uploads are fixed, so here are mine:

long story . I gotta fly till next week..

tsuter 08-29-2004 05:11 AM

I'll still trade a working 3" black VDO clock for a working 3" black VDO boost gauge...even up.

Until then... the small one goes down below.

No way I'm doing a cheesy install of a 2 1/8 gauge in a 3" clock hole.

A free used spark plug for the one who can guess what I used for the face of the gauge mounting plate.............

temo79 08-29-2004 08:02 AM

KTL, I dont want the plug but my guess is an old basketball?

bell 08-29-2004 12:51 PM

i was going to say a piece of cardboard and a sharpie marker :D

warpspd 08-29-2004 01:19 PM

sort of a small piece of rubber off something?

cowtown 08-29-2004 02:12 PM

Volts, AFM, and Boost - who needs a ventilation system, anyway?

TRE Cup 08-30-2004 08:56 AM

To reface the tach with 12 o'clock position red line, new lens, new bezel, and the Carrera RS logo will cost $280. Colors and other options on the rest of the guages are extra

KTL 08-30-2004 03:20 PM

The bracket face material I used is a piece of shiny conveyor belt material. How cheesy is that?

I originally intended to use the belting for my stalled Ruf fiberglass front bumper project. Bumper didn't come with the lip and I didn't like the belt finish, so............ Glad I could find something on which to use the stuff. Also works good as a no-slip surface for your jack pad. Just attach a piece to the jack pad with some Liquid Nails. :D

Randy Webb 08-30-2004 04:41 PM

TRE - why is the red line (start) not at 12 O'clock? I figure there must be a reason...

TRE Cup 08-31-2004 09:36 AM

We did as the client asked. redline on his motor is 12 o' clock (7000 rpm) but he wanted a larger area all in red. some like it one way, some like it another...

Vipergrün 08-31-2004 09:57 AM

Cow.... How did you wire up the A/F guage? I currently have the O2 sensor in my SC disconnected. Does this unit wire into the sensor or the 'brains'?

Thanks!
