Backdate->Update->SCWDP->fat Carrera PIG!
So my backdate stalled, and I needed to get some track time...
Work has been on a crazy schedule, and I figure I couldn't finish the car properly and in time to catch the last couple of track days... Solution: buy another car...I though of an SC, but that idea was gone before it was finished...I thought about a 993, but Jim Richards' car is too pretty for me to bastardized (you know it would happen). I bought a black on tan 89 Carrera. And it drives like a fat PIG! It is like a lineman versus a half back when compared to my Bastard. The lighten 76 w/ a 3.0 is snappy and climbs the torque curve unlike any thing I've driven...(never drove a Viper before :) ) The Carrera will spend time as my daily driver (when the roads are salt free) and a stand in for track driving when the '76 is out for some reason. It drives OK, but it is obvious that there is a huge weight difference. I'm guessing it's close to 700 lbs of difference. So stay tuned you fat pig loving Carrera drivers...you're be crying when I put the bastard soul into the "Pig" after I get it into the super secret GruppeB lab. Get your tissues ready. I'm gonna make you shed some tears :D and what was that? SCWD-what? Sorry, no pictures yet..it ain't clean enough... |
Souk, you clearly need a Steve Wong chip, euro pre-muffler and sport muffler on that thing.
|
No! I want a Souk Wong chip :D
Really though, I have a pre-muffler already (remember? :) ) on the Bastard. I'll pull it off and put it on the Pig since Bastard will now likely get headers and a custom hush can.... The Pig is going to be my daily car, and I kinda like it quiet the way it is. With the pre-muffler, it might just be right...no I've not gone sissy, but I don't like the idea of waking the kids and the neighbors when I pull out of the drive early inthe mornign for work. So yep..a chip is in the works. I need to put bigger rims on it too. |
Congratulations! But before calling it a pig why not take it to the track and get some lap times for comparison.
|
Well Bill (:)), I took it out this morning on my usual test loop through the corn fields and really gave it a work out. It feels like a pig in the lower RPMs where my 3.0 feels better, but if I strip some weight off and then run it...I think it would be pretty close..maybe .. I have to give the Carrera Troops a hard time you know :D
Here are a couple pix from a few minutes ago: crap can't upload...wait (something's wrong with Wayne's server) |
Can't locate Image/Size.pm in @INC (@INC contains: D:/Perl/lib D:/Perl/site/lib .) at D:\PelicanBBS\cgi-bin\vb\image_upload.cgi line 3.

So, how do you like the G50?
Suspect most of the difference you're feeling is powerband differences-ultimate speed should be close, if not edge to the 3.2. |
The G50 is great! The lady of the house can drive it. She never wanted to drive the Bastard, and I don't blame her. The clutch and gear box takes more getting use to than she can bear..and see didn't want to be the one to mess it up...she too the Carrera out last night for a short spin and she "liked it."
I still can't upload a pic! But you all know aht a 911 looks like right? :) |
Excellent choice!
Pick a Carrera to bastardize instead of a SC. |
I did the recon on this car before Souk threw down the coin- what a good guy I am..................... :D
And Souk isn't being too exaggerative, for once ;) , about this car when he says it's not as lively as his other 911. The car has a noticeable hole in the torque curve down low. Just not much grunt down there. Car drives nice and runs excellent. No blowby on accel. nor decel. But something's missing off-idle and below 3000 rpm. I drove my car when we looked at the car a second time, and my feelings were confirmed. I'm not saying my car is a screamer by any means. I have all sorts of luxuries like a big stereo amp, sub, boat anchor RS America seats, spare tire (in the trunk, not on me), and basically very little weight reduction other than A/C removal and removed rear bumper pads. Nonetheless, my car has a much stronger low end torque feel. FWIW, my car has a SW chip and a premuffler. That's it. I'm sure with a little tuning, the car will move along nicely. Just needs a little TLC. Souk, that Autoth. chip is calling your name! Souk............... SOUK.................. put me in your New Pig........... nobody wants me............ Kevin couldn't sell me if his life depended on it.......... i'm just collecting dust over here.............. the price is right........ FREE to a fellow obese Carrera owner................ :p |
How can I refuse the offer Kevin! Sold! For free :D I'm thinking the cat might need to be replaced or my pre-muffer installed. It might be the low end restriction holding her back...
|
"Free" might be a bit of a stretch. You'll owe me something eventually. And, no, I won't accept one of your sisters............. ;)

Maybe I should retract that last statement.................. Mmmmmm..........mmmmmmm 'sho is good. |
I'm tellin ya, chip that thing! You won't believe the difference. BTW, the pre-muffler adds a nice little growl, but not much louder overall. That G50 IS sweet, isn't it?
And to answer your question, I do think everyone here knows what a 911 looks like, except maybe Loren. |
G50 is great...the 915 aint't bad but it's a driver's box...
and for those who don't know what a 911 looks like :D http://motomotions.com//img/Webpix/89CARRERA%201.BMP |

The chip, pre-muffler and a sport muffler of some type will liven the car up, but the off-idle/low rpm grunt still is not really there. My car didn't do much below 4,000 rpm stock and with the mods above the car came to life earlier in the rev range (3,300-3,500). My "pig' tips the scales at about 2,850 lbs with a/c and all the other Carrera bits, but the 3.5L should cure the lack of low-end torque. Nice car BTW. |

Souk, About that engine braking comment you made when we were on the drive? Not much to speak of on my car either. There's a slight decel when you hop off the pedal, but still seems to have a good coast to it. Maybe it's that hubba bubba clutch housing with all that stored up momentum in it? :D Looks good when you get all the grime off of it. I got first dibs on those 8's if you unload them. http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/happy.gif |
Kevin, I've been flogging it a bit and it is barely noticeabke. I think a bit of tuning will cure it..it better or I'm bastardizing the engine!
I actually haven't washed it yet int that picture...it was just wet from the rain the noght prior...black can conceal dirt :D (Edit, w/r wheels: Didn't you a set of 7X8X16's from Pete?) And a DME 3.4 ??? Hmm... |

You use the same car wash I use for the Laser. Mother Nature's Car Wash. I washed the Laser 3 days in a row and you can't beat the price. :D |
A premuff, a dual out, a SW chip and you'll be saying SC what? Of course the 89's - they did load up with options - does it have heated seats too?
|
Quote:
Only options I noticed on the car are 16 in. Fuchs (6 & 8), sunroof, cruise control, F/R spoilers. Oh, and a totally 80's looking tan dashboard. Not the actual dash top itself, but the area where the gauges, ignition switch, stereo, etc. are located. Kinda weird. Kinda cool looking too. Different. |
Kinda strange - I could not find a lightly optioned '89 car to save my life when I was looking for my car - especially in the great white north...
|
Yeah, they're hard to find that way. My '88 is almost exactly the same, except it didn't even come with the spoilers. I really like 'em that way.
|
Souk,
I think once you dial it in and loose a tad weight, you'll be happy w/the Carrera. Mine is a little under 2600lbs (none of the power BS) it's a hoot to drive around the foothills. I sure can't call her a pig especailly w/ the Steve W. chip, pre-muff and sport muff. Consider the the factory short shift for your G50, it makes it even better. Still love my bastard SC though....very tossible (23/29 torsions, bilstein sports etc) and w/the 3.2, it moves quite nicely.......it is pretty ugly though :) |
I gave it a wash and wax today so I had to take it out for a cruise and take some pictures. (As for the the options, the car has all the ones I want and nothing more. I'm keeping all the stuff...it's my regular cruiser so the AC and stereo are staying. The nimble Bastard is for the real fun and this, this..Fat Bastard is for running out for Chinese take out :D )
My co-pilot for the first real cruise, who I made promise not to tell Mom how fast we were going. He kept watching the speedo, but I think he had fun...."man, now I know how fast these Porsches go." http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1093919898.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1093919911.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1093919921.jpg |
Souk, I got a used KO3 I'm still wanting to give away if you want to twin'em up on that "pig".
I'll even consult for free! |
I'm thinking about starting some sort of betting pool with regards to this car. I'll need you to send me an itemized list of all modifications so that I can tally them each month. :)
I keep ready Eric McIrishman's threads on going lighter... that car at 2200 lbs is a posibility with just removing crap and $1000 in fiberglass. :D -Bernie |
Thad you may be onto something there..let me finish my first Bastard, then we'll see where Fat Bastard wants to go... :D I can't think about it now. else the other car will never see direct daylight again.
Bernie, it's staying stock. The other car is my street racer :) |
FAT BASTARD....don't lift the kilt.......%^B

Just don't drink and paint (any more) ... ;) Thanks again, Craig. |

Do you mean the factory Club Sport short shift? If so, what makes it any better? The shift lever is a paltry 3/4 inch shorter. That's it. Nothing else is different from stock = pretty negligible difference. I installed the CS shift lever and i'd be willing to bet no one would know if I didn't tell them. Heck, Souk made no mention of it when he drove my car the other day. Not trying to start a dispute, just looking for some feedback. :D |
Quote:
Next thing? You'll be putting inlaid crest center caps on the car. Oh wait, it's already got 'em....................  (that's right, double rolling of the eyes) :D |
Souk,
When you come down for the GruppeB Bonfire of Doom!!! you can drive Papa Smurf if you wanna compare apples to oranges or if apples to apples are more your style KurtV may let you drive his Carrera. |

I drove the car to Farm and Fleet last night for a couple of cases of 20/50. I got the primo spot in the front and left plenty of space to the car on my left and the right was not a parking slot…came out and had to give it a once over to check for scratches :) I AM getting soft! The Bastard was so ugly, I didn’t really care. Hmm!
I drove the car to work today and it felt OK, but it still feels fat under 4000RPM. I think the valves are too tight (Kevin your comment about it being quieter than your car….and the periodic puff out the exhaust might be explained). I need to change the oil anyhow (who knows what or how old the stuff in it is), so I’ll check the valves when I have the oil drained out. As for the feel of the car, it wasn’t that much different from Kevin's car. Kevin has the Steve Wong chip and a pre-muffler, so it might explain the extra umph at lower RPM when compared to my Fat Bastard. The shifter felt the same and rolling through the gears, I couldn’t feel a difference. I haven’t dug into the car yet so I may or may not have the extra ¾ inch of the short shifter. It is so much better than my tired 915 I probably can’t tell. Kurt stop showing off that engine or I’ll have to rebuild and paint mine! Shawn…if I drive your car, you better add some ballasts..or the Fat Bastard might see a weight loss program :( |
