Any reason to have a chip mode/non-chipped mode?

Any reason to have a chip mode/non-chipped mode at the flick of a switch?

I thought I had seen this in the past, just cant find it.

I think the reasoning was for performance on one side, and stock on the other. The stock would be better for fuel economy and for emission inspections.

The one you are referring to is likely the "no bad days" (sp?) chip. I think Ingo and MikeZ might be involved somehow.

I don't have the luxury of a switch, but I did have a chip burned with a 2800 RPM rev limiter if it ever needs to go to the body shop. Should keep the car in the parking lot...

Smog checks and fuel quality immediately come to mind.

Is it a good "makes sence" idea for the sake of fule economy, or is it easier just to swap chips for emissions since fuel economy wont bemuch different?

Wil Ferch 09-02-2004 08:50 AM

I've seen this offered for 944's.

A "plug" is insertd into the motherboard and a cable with two receptacles 'hangs out" outside of the box. Something like that. Wouls make chip change-out easy w/o opening th box.

Emissions, etc. as stated would be another influence....

I have the NBD chip, with the switch. I only run the performance settng with 94 octane fuel. My concern would be the risk of pinging with poorer fuel, which is all that's available in California. I don't believe there's a two-position chip available for 3.2's, which is a shame, since there's no knock sensor on those motors. In my opinion, NBD and Steve W should get together and make this happen.

Jack:
The conceptual problem I have with the switch is what do you do when you have a "blend" of fuels ? You typically don't run either case to a "dry" tank condition.

What's really needed is a dynamic system that adjusts automatically, by retarding timing and "X"....when there is imminent pre-detonation...like today's modern cars....going back up when higher octane fuel is sensed.

I am hoping Steve chimes in with some "good news"

I have an electronic "chipswitch" on my key fob for the VW NB. Three installed programs: Race, Stock, Valet.
Anyone got teen age drivers?? You figure it out.

The multimap 3.2 chip is "known technology" to Steve W and other the DME hackers on the board.

I have the steve w chip in my 3.2 and no problem passing emisions.

I'm no DME hacker, but it seems like it would be very easy to do, really. The chip for a 3.2 DME is what - a 27C64? Get a 27C128, burn both maps in it, and toggle the A13 line with a buffered switch. Whether on nor you should do it is another question.

Bingo. You can even have 4 maps with a 27C256. They don't even buffer the switch (which seems a little odd but apparently works).

I personally would be uncomforable with that. For me, I'd wire the switch into the input of a D flip-flop and hook the clock input of the f/f to a R/C delayed rising edge. Capture the switch state at power on and keep it that way until power down. I don't like the idea of maps randomly changing while driving. But that's just me.

no! in short if you bought a Steve Wong chip, you have a better running car so why would you want to go back.

That's the point of my question.
