Help, the darn thing is alive!

Forgive my ignorance, I have only owned my 77 Targa ROW for about a month now and have noticed that the darn thing has a mind of it's own! For instance, shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd (going into 4th is no issue), I have to be at 4500 to 5000 rpms other wise she won't engage as easy - and sometimes not at all. It's like the car is trying to tell me how to drive her. If I hit that sweet spot, she glides in like a well worked, ah.... well for you married guys, lets just say it feels like Friday night, second week of the month that ends in Y! Are all 911's like that? The owner prior replaced the clutch and syncros. I have had her with maybe 4000 miles on that trans work. Clutch engeages about 1/3 to 1/2 way down. Any ideas?

maybe the linkage needs re-adjusted, if it's off a little it can cause the symptoms you describe.
have you checked out the book "101 projects"? it covers this well

Sounds like bad synchros. But it's definitely not right or normal. Before you go to any expensive lengths to verify that the previous owner really did anything to the transaxle, confirm that your bushings are in good shape, and that your shift linkage is properly adjusted.

Does it have the factory short shift kit? When it falls slightly out of adjustment, this type of thing can occur (more easily than with the standard shifter, IMO).

Swepco isn't going to fix that problem.

I checked out project 37 - Shifting Improvements. Looks like installing new bushings and a coupler is pretty straight forward. Do you guys think this will help? I hate to think that the syncros are bad, heck their not that old. If this seems like the way to go do, should I also install a short shifter as well? Heck whats another $130!
