85 930 pricing help
Currently looking at a 1985 930. Car has 89k on the odometer, black on black. Minor chips in hood, slight door ding on both doors, only visible when standing next to car. Overall exterior and interior look very good. Am having ppi performed on Wed., compression test, leak down, etc... Car is supposed to be all orginal with now mods., will confirm after ppi. I have the fever bad on this car. Asking price is $28500.00. Is this car priced fairly? Is there anything I should be aware of with this year? Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated. sounds maybe a tad high, especially considering the mileage. Has the engine been rebuilt? 60-80K seems to be about the usual limit for a 930 engine. If it is the original engine, you should consider a rebuild price into the purchase price.

the price is not out of line with what one would cost in Vancouver (given a good ppi) - you would however have to be especially careful with regards to modifications performed to allow importation - usually a hack job of sorts

I think that is way high. For that much, or a little more, you can get a much better, low mileage, US car.

With 85K may need Clutch, engin rebuild, Trans rebuild.
With out rebuilds 22K, with $28-30K. 85 930's are great cars, hope you can work it out!! Let me know if I can help with any questions.

Do turbo engines 'typically' need rebuilds at this milage? With a normally aspirated engine (eg 3.2), they can often go 150K miles w/out rebuild.
I was looking at a turbo '89 w/ 150K miles w/ No rebuild. Is this super high milage w/o rebuild? Clutch too? thanks mike '86 coupe

150K is very high mileage for a 930, although maybe the owner really babied it. But, probably not. As for the clutch, it's probably had many clutches.

As a rule 930 motors are somewhat bulletproof. Very strong bottom ends, pistons and cylinders seem to be weaker link. Clutches last about 35-50k (if your not a HP Junkie)! The 930 4 speed trans. are also very strong, around 50k synchro's usually cause a rebuild. It maybe possible to baby a 930 to 150k without engin, trans, and clutch work. (wish I could do it)

Sounds like 150K miles on turbo engine will need rebuild soon. No significant tranny work done either (G50/50 5 speed). Turbo rebuilt at 100Kmiles.
What's ballpark $$: 1)engine rebuild 2)turbo rebuild or replace (K27?) 3)tranny/synchro work thanks mike '86 coupe

Cost of a rebuild can be from a few thousand if you do the work yourself, to several thousand (10K to 15K) if you pay someone to do it, to the ungodly amount I'm spending to do it myself. Granted, I'm including the EFI conversion and many other tidbits (clutch, r&p, etc.) in my costs.
