Hello to all on this board. I officially became a P-car owner today. I now own a 77 930 that I first saw here on this board. My first question is how can I get the car to run cooler at idle for a period of time, say when stopped in traffic for 10 - 15 min in 95 to 100+ degree weather? I know that turning off the a/c is a must, but what else can I do? I guess going from least expensive to most.
Thanks in advance

How hot is the car running?
You can switch to a larger crank pulley to get more airflow through the engine. You can address oil cooling with a Carrera cooler and maybe a fan on the cooler if you are in stop-and-go so much. Does you car still have the stock loop cooler? An intercooler is also a good idea in your climate, but that's not an issue at idle.

First off, pictures must be posted. Do not neglect this rite of passage.
Heat has been talked about an awful lot recently. You would do well to perform a Search on my name within the last month. What does your 930 use now? A 28-tube cooler or radiator located under the front right fender? Get more air flow to it. Consider replacing the rightside running light with the air scoop sold by our sponsor. Consider also a fan mounted directly on the cooler (if you have one). Also, check ignition timing, CO setting, cleanliness of engineside oil cooler fins, cleanliness of heads and cylinders "under" the alternator. God help you if you have a trombone passive cooler like myself. You will be pummeled with comments to turn it into a lightstand. Good advice... John

First make sure that what you have is working optimaly, the engine mounted cooler in particular may have collected lot of crud over the years.
Be sure that rodents haven't built their nest in the nice cozy area above the cylinders & below the f/g shroud. Be sure the car is in tune If you still have a trombone in front, replace it w/ a proper radiator w/ fan such as a B&B or even an oem Carrera version.

Lets see, I most definitly will get the scoop. Yes I do have the finned cooler in the front fender. Any leads on where to get a fan. I'd like to hook it up with a manual switch. I can fabricate brackets if necessary. And for the rite of passage...
I truly feel like a little kid today, yippeeeee ![]()

Hi. That is a nice car. Good luck with it. And get a beater Camry for sitting in traffic.

Nice car! The radiators need lots of air. If the heat issuw only arises in traffic then the fan will help.
Lots of decent sources do a google Here's one The best for track use of course is the valance mount. ![]()

Thanks for all the help, you all are great. I'll get it over the pit tomorrow and check for air blockage issues. Also will investigate the fan on the cooler. I won't ever use this car for anything but having fun, but I'd like to have it set up so that I can use on a hot day here and not worry. I live in Laredo Texas where 100+ degrees is the norm for a good part of the year and I want to be able to use the car anytime without issues. Again, thank you all for your replies.
Robert

Surprised it wasn't already mentioned, but you should check to make sure that the thermostat for the fender mounted cooler is working properly. The easiest way to do this is to quickly touch the oil cooler lines when the car is warm (over 190-200 degrees). If the lines are hot, the T-stat is working. If cold, then the T-stat may not be opening to circulate oil to the cooler. Also, the air scoop on the fender is really only effective when the car is moving to force air through it. This piece won't make a difference at idle. As mentioned, clean and tune the engine and think about a fan for the cooler. It's a pretty simple job to fab up some brackets and wire a dash mounted switch. Good luck!

Note that JP said lines, plural: probably won't happen but both lines must be hot to ensure return and no blockage.
Great looking 930. The wheels really work on that car. John

How many blades are there on your fan??
Also - some tips on how to implement Bill's advice: " First make sure that what you have is working optimaly, the engine mounted cooler in particular may have collected lot of crud over the years. -- use a spray washer at a comm. car wash (first); bring some "orange" cleaner and spray it on; also clean the area around and behind the oil tank and above the R. tailights. A 2o benefit is that your car will be about 15 lbs lighter once you get all the crud and gravel out. -- It won't hurt to make sure the oil lines are clean too. " Be sure that rodents haven't built their nest in the nice cozy area above the cylinders & below the f/g shroud. -- pull the shroud and use a shop vac -- can also try inspection mirrors for various angles " |
