New alternator questions

Hi all,

I bought a new Valeo alernator for my 911 ('79 SC). While replacing I came up with a couple of questions:

1) Now that I have the fan assembly off, should I bother with bead blasting/sanding/etc?

2) The PO obviously lost the original shims and substituted thinner ones (a total of 9) - should I leave it like it is, or order new shims?

3) I have a real hard time turning the new alternator by hand - the one I removed spins smooth as silk. Is this normal?

Thanks!

I've been told that its very important to have the correct number of shims on the alternator. I suppose that too many would be ok but too little and you run the chance of the nut comming lose and leaving the building.

Is the alternator just harder to turn or does it make a sound once every revolution? I had one or two rebuilt ones that made a distinct click and returned them. Chuck
