slot yer own seats anyone?

Has anyone slotted their own fiberglass seats? I've got a Sparco Fighter that doesn't have a slot. I was thinking of cutting my own, but since it is a bottom mount seat, I worried that it might not be a good idea (even with my plan of sealing with epoxy around the cut).

So alternatives would be to run a v-sub through the lap belt slots or sell the seat and buy an Evo or equivalent.

Todd: Don't know if your plan will work, but you can seal the cut with fiberglass resin available at your local auto parts house.

I was thinking that I could also take some resin and attach some reinforcement strips on the bottom. But I'm not sure that I want to muck around with something that is just a little important from a safety standpoint...

I don't think yo will compromise the seat's integrity if you radius the ends of the slot, file or sand smooth and seal with a bit of epoxy, as you say, or resin. Reinforcement can't hurt.

How will you handle the upholstery part?

Can you drill, countersink, put some screws in, and then cover with resin for a smooth finish? I've never seen the seats, so I'm flying blind here...

I was just going to slit it, as there is a thin cover, and there are two pads that velcro onto that (I was going to do the slot at the gap between the two pads). If I was feeling sassy I could find an upholstry place and have the edge stitch the cut.

I think a chainsaw is the best tool for this job. Just poke it in!

Don't they call that "buttonholeing?"

and obviously I need to be sitting in the seat while doing the cutting to make sure I get the position right...
