I thought they all blow smoke occasionally on startup?

Were you parked on an incline? I ask because my '81 doesn't normally smoke on startup when on level ground but when it's parked on an incline it will blow a huge cloud.

Yes, they CAN blow smoke but this engine only has 500 miles...I never dreamed that it would, and it's on a flat surface ...Well,..I might be a QT hi but, I'am not on the max mark...And yes it sits about 27" hi in the rear but...I would'nt think that matters. Does the oil ring rotate inside the Cyl. they fit tight when I assembled...I have not used any oil in those 500...Thanks Frank

The rings can rotate. We've had to take the top end off and rotate them, then give them a good breaking in.

What was your break in process?

Not saying you'll have to take it apart, but it's possibility.

You know, at about 150miles into my top end rebuild, it started to puff on started up. I started freaking out thinking i did something wrong, then about three more cold starts after that it stopped. So i checked the oil level and it was a hair under the full mark, oops.

My motor has a total pro rebuild about 4k ago. It smokes on every other start-up or so. It gets more than 1000 miles to a quart, however. I had a leakdown done on it at pre-purchase two months ago. Less than 10% across all 6. I was told (here and by mechanic) the smoke was a normal condition for a boxer motor.

Prior to my top end rebuild, my 1987 Carrera smoked on start up and got approx 600 miles per liter. After the rebuild , it rarely smokes on start up and gets approx 2000 miles per liter. Break in consisted of varying the RPM for the first 1000 miles.

One more quick tip, in order to properly seal ausil rings/cylinders during break in, I've heard and tried the accel/decel method of accelerating hard to 5k rpm then letting off the throttle and coasting down to 3k rpm, then repeat.
