78 911 windshield install help!

hello, i have doen a ground up restoration on my 78 911 all that is left is finishing the glass. have instaled the back and side windows with not to much problem. but the windshield is giving me so trouble. it is new with a new oem seal the trim fit back in just as it was to begin with. but when we start roping it in we can't seem to get it to pull in far enough to start to lock in. it just wants to pull in enough to catch the outer lip. when it is sitting there it looks as if the top corners have to much of a gap but perhaps that is just a visual and as it goes in it will seal out. as i said the trim fit as it should so all must be correct size. i have packed the corners of the frame with dope to seal. what's going on here. any help ideas. should it be this difficult. thanks for you help in advance. terry

lots of soap and water should make it pull in.....soap up the gaskets and then try and pull it in...

Since you are using a new windshield, are you sure it is the correct size? I think that later 964 models used a slightly larger windshield size to cater for the trimless seal, so possibly you bought the wrong size windshield?

When I installed a new windshield on my '78 it went in easily with enough pressure from the outside. It was a one-man job using those giant suckers that the profi's use.

I've heard that KY Jelly makes a better lubricant than soapy water!

this is only what I did and learned.
The front shield floats in the frame and can be kicked out from inside in an accident. I used dum dum 2in strips at the lower corner, sides, and center lower about 1/2 in thick. I used synthetic axle grease on gasket to frame edge. After install it was able to slide around with hand force adjustment. If it sits to low I would pull it and use more dum dum in designated area. Don't drive car for 24hrs after install.

On my 78, the back window was much harder to install than the windshield. Double check that you have the right windshield. Mine went in (and came out) pretty easy.

Could the sealant or left over crud/debris be "blocking" the glass from seating?

Maybe try wrapping the rope around 2 or 3 times to "open" the rubber lip more so it will seat better.

I also use some windshield suction cups to help me hold and adjust the glass during the install.
