Heater not working

Last month I finally took delivery of my '84 930 which I bought from California and imported into Canada.

So far nothing major has cropped up aside from the heater doesn't appear to be working correctly. This car isn't equipped with those levers down by the parking brake, instead it has the temperature control dial.

Is that dial supposed to spin around in circles so freely, because mine does. It just spins and spins and doesn't appear to do anything.

What my heater does do, is turn on for maybe a minute when I start the car, once it's off it stays off.

Any thoughts on what would cause this?

Thanks!

It should not turn freely. Should be an individual click for each number. Sounds like the knob might be stripped out.

If you look down on the side of the box that the dial is on there is an access panel that you can remove. You may need to take the passenger seat out to do this. Look inside and there should be a rod with a ball joint.

Check to see if the ball joint is connected properly.

If this is the one by the parking brake, then NO.
I have one of these out of my '87, so if they are the same, you can have mine for free (CDN), if it will help you out.

Do a search on my name and John Walkers....there was a thread that id'd an upgraded ball-end shaft part that might have broken inside the control unit. worked great.

I'd thought I would post a photo, if it might help.
Is this the switch you are talking about?

This one is a 0 - 3 switch, I think, the 'higher-end' (turbos perhaps) are 0 - 10 switches?

Anyway if this is the switch, there are tabs that trip the micro-switches, and stop the rotate. Also a ball detent, to give it a positive 'stop' at each setting (click, click, click).

Thanks for the replies, going to go look at mine right now.

Without running out and looking I'm pretty sure mine is a dial with 10 settings, 9 + defrost,

Thanks will I found the post you mentioned here.

Unimog I'll let you know if i need that or not, thanks for the offer!

Trying to take a look at it today.

So I took it all apart. The plastic little wiper arm that is supposed to ride all the divets giving it that click through each setting feel; had broken off. I managed to shake it out of there and have glued it on, hopefully it will hold.

The rheostat was also completely seized, looks like coffee or something was spilled in it awhile ago, managed to clean it up and it is spinning freely again.

Will put it all back together tonight hopefully.
