gas mileage?

I'm curious what gas mileage people typically get under
various conditions. When driving my '87 Targa fairly agressively
(running the RPM up to 4-5K before shifting) in stop-and-go
conditions, I find that I get about 15 mpg. Is this about right
for spirited city driving? or should I be expecting more?
The car is stock, except for a Bursch sport muffler.

I did just add a Steve Wong chip the other day, but have no
mileage data yet. Can I expect any significant change in gas
mileage with this change? Thanks for any feedback...

I'm headed down to south Texas this week for a few days so I'll be able to give you an estiimate on highway driving aveage at speed. Usually I average in the low 20's for a trip like this.

I get about 15 in my SC. More if I'm long distance on the freeway (which doesn't happen much).

I used to get 19-20 in my '88 Targa, with and without a Steve Wong Chip. It was not used in stop-and-go, though. Mainly highway and backroads. So I think you're in the right ballpark with your '87.

My '77 930 engine gets about 11 (and is driven really hard) on the road, 6 on the track, and so far the 993 has gotten 21 (mostly highway).

in my experience, my 79' SC gets about 18-23mpg when using Shell 91. Even in city driving I get very close to 19 or 20mpg and when I excercise my 911 out in the mountains I also get around 20 (at least). A Car and Driver road test of the 1980 911 SC got rated at 16mpg. A lot depends on the gas.....I found that chevron and shell 91 are far beyond the rest, IMO.

My SC is somewhere in the 15-18 mpg range city driving. No working o2 sensor, semi-rich mixture.

Does a gallon of Chevron or Shell go further than say, Arco? I remember the old Shell commercials when the cars ripped through those giant paper signs showing how they provided the greatest distance on a tank of gas. I thought the feds made them drop the ad.

In my stock 87 I recently got 24.5 mpg on a 280 mile drive down the hwy averaging around 80 mph, using chevron 91. (with the A/C on most of the way!) Overall I get around 20 mpg, and that's about 75% hwy, 25% city. And I can't help but stomp on it a lot.

I've got a 1995 Cab and get 18 city and about 24 highway, just as a point of reference.

I use Exxon-Mobil 91; maybe that's my problem. Are Shell and
Chevron 91 really that much better? I wouldn't have expected any
noticable difference?

'86 Carrera with rebuilt engine with 5,000 miles: I get 15-20mpg around town depending upon how much I put my foot into it. A week ago I drove to Warsaw, IN, which is 512 miles one way from my house. Averaged 28 mpg at an average speed of 80mph. Did it on one tank of gas!

from my testing, I have found that on average, for both my cars, Shell gets around 3-4 mpg more than all other brands with chevron being pretty good too but usually more expensive. When highway driving the difference is even more! funny....my dad always got shell when I was little telling me it was the best, and he is right again. (my Sc just had a new cat put in, not sure if that affects anything)

I always seem to get poor gas mileage on Arco regardless which car I use.

My last three trips to Tahoe I got 29.5mpg at an average speed of 75 with the A/C on and my odometer calibrated to the mileage posts (5% correction factor).

I got 23 on my last tank in my SC, O2 sensor connected, mostly highway ~70mph, but some in town stuff. that's with 10% ethanol gas, which definitely hurts mileage I get around 20 even with lots of in town as long as I have the O2 connected. car runs cooler on the track with it disconnected (makes sense).
