update on Paintscratch and Porsche colors
After a few e-mails back and forth, I made some progress with Collin from Paintscratch. I'm going to say that we simply had some bad communication, but now are on the right track. To his credit, Collin e-mailed me a number of times to try to solve my problem, which is way more than many internet businesses will do. He told me that Porsche colors from before 1980 are really hard to pin down. It is even possible that my car has a factory custom color because he checked his sources and could not come up with a name or formula for the numbers I gave him. The factory custom colors were done on a limited basis. A color was made and then a code was created for the color. Problem was that Porsche didn't record a lot of the custom colors so they are forever lost. I also called the p.o. for any info he had on the car. He said the color is "Sebring White", hence Sebring77. When I couldn't find a Porsche color name that was Sebring White I figured he was mistaken. Maybe not after all. So from now on, unless someone can prove otherwise-it's Sebring White. I'm guessing (never having seen Chiffon White) it's a hair more yellow than Chiffon White. Waaay lighter than Light Yellow, however. Soooo, now I'll take my car to a bodyshop and have them color scan it. It's a lot to go through for touch up paint!

I'm not sure why you started a new thread ... losing all history and comments on your topic ... which hasn't changed one iota ... I suggest that you delete this thread and post your update on the original thread!!!
The paintscratch comments about pre-80 are typical pure BS from a coupany that hasn't even tried to make their paint swatches even close to most colors which they claim to be able to match! Their focus is late-model cars and they feel obligated to come up with an excuse for not caring about pre-80 cars ... even if their comments are non-factual! If Porsche assigned a paint code and Glasurit supplied the product, you can be assured that the code and the formula still exist, and Stoddard can still get it! Dupont and PPG probably have the codes as well ... for example, my local Dupont dealer can still come up with all of the rare, but popular early-70s Porsche colors, and they even still have catalogs with paint swatches that are quite accurate for the various reds, yellows, oranges and blues that are popular on this forum ... but obscure to anyone outside the Porsche-specific universe!

i beg to differ. i painted my fog light hole covers with the paint from paint scratch.com and it matched my burgandy red paint perfectly for my 1968 912 coupe.

Hoff ... even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while!
Try looking up 30 random colors from the service manual for pre-80 cars and tell us how many they match up with??? It won't be a passing percentage! And, if you do it based on their colors posted on the web site, the percentage will be even lower!

Well Warren-seems you're a wealth of information. Too bad you didn't decide to chime in and provide the information regarding paint code until I had sufficiently annoyed you with my update. I apologize if I offended anyone else by trying to inform those of whom may be in a similar situation.
Warren-please feel free to guide me with your expert (nearly ten thousand posts have GOT to count for something!) message posting etiquette tips further. I find your input invaluable. |

Paint scratch came thru for me!
They got the color of my car right the first time from the code. also talked with me on how to apply the paint and do all the other work. Good company to deal with. Only thing I didn't like was the real small vials that they sent the paint in it would have been nice to have it all in one container.

Check out how close Paintscratch came to matching my color. They did not even bother to check it against their own sample.

I'm happier with Tower Paint. Even their spray cans are superior.
If Porsche did a one off it may be hard to match. Depends on the process they employed. Did Porsche custom match and mix paint for a special wishes car? Or did the coordinate with Sikkens or Glasurit (or one of the other suppliers) to arrive at a specific formula? That is the question..... If you can supply a sample Tower will match for a nominal fee.
