911 emergency kit

Hello all,

I just drove home my new baby--a 1984 911 Carrera.

I plan on taking it autocrossing and to DE events that are a good distance away from my house. I'd like to put together an emergency kit and wanted to know what I need in it.

A spare relay of some sort for the FI?
Extra belts?
Oil?
Bribe money for local law inforcement?
What else?

Thanks.

I've said it before....credit card and cell phone.....

It seems I always pack the "wrong" parts I need for a field fix...

First things first! If the car is new to you, you need to set a baseline regarding regular maintenance to insure your car doesn't break down on the road. I recommend the following:

BUY THE BENTLEY MANUAL FOR THE CARRERA!!!!

1. Change oil and oil filter.
2. Replace Air Filter.
3. Replace sparkplugs, rotor and distributor cap.
4. Inspect sparkplug wires and replace if original.
5. Adjust valves.
6. Check for broken head studs and check head stud torque.
7. Change transmission fluid with Swepco 201
8. New gas filter.
9. Replace fan belt, make sure you have 6 shims for adjustment.
10. Do a compression and leakdown test to get an idea what kind of shape the engine is in.
11. Check air pressure in all the tires.
12. Retorque lug nuts to 96 foot pounds.
13. Inflate spare tire to see if it holds air and then deflate.
14. Check date on battery. If over 4 years old think about replacing.
15. Inspect brake pads and rotors, replace as necessary.
16. Flush out old brake fluid and replace with new.
17. Replace DME relay with a new one and keep the old DME for a spare.

Now for road trips here is what I carry:

1. Various fuses
2. DME relay
3. Fan belt
4. Factory tool kit
5. AAA Card.
6. Cell phone
7. Tire plug kit and small air compressor.
8. And in the future, after having watched Souk pull one out of the front trunk on his Carrera, while I am getting my clothes dirty, coveralls.

Virgin,

Kurt, Wil, and Joe are right on.
Yes, several relays and a complete wiring diagram for your car.
A test light, some wire, and a couple of small alligator clips.
Fuses.
Belts.
Oil and the 75c spout.
Red rags & paper towels.
Small bottle of Windex.
Exterior RainX.
Flat repair-inflator.
Spare gas and oil caps (for when you leave one at the gas station.)
Spare dipstick (for when you loose yours in the oil tank.)
FI diagram and troubleshooting instructions.

Of course the list is open-ended.

Send me your e-mail address and I’ll send you a draft of “How to Go to DE.” (It is too long for Wayne’s Pelican system.)

Best,
Grady

Get everything sorted in your garage, then just take a few quarts of oil with you. I drive my Carrera to work everyday and I don't carry much, but the factory tool kit and some fuses and relays. If I have big problems, I'll call home for parts or get a tow truck. Roadside repairs should be quick and easy, unless you are on an exended trip.

I pack coveralls in the trunk so I don't get my wool slacks all dirty if I have to get a peak under the car or just to change a tire between the office and the house..or fix a friends broken A-arm Right Kurt?

Grady, I would love to see your DE list. Please e-mail it to "souk at comcast dot com" ...thanks!

Thanks for all the great feedback. I'm looking forward to being a part of the Porsche community. My first purchase for the car will be Wayne's 101 book. For now, at least, if I need a wiring diagram to fix my car, it is going to the shop!

Grady, I'd love to see your DE guide. My address is dcathers at yahoo dot com.

Virgin,

The wiring and fuel information is not necessarily for you. There are many skilled mechanics that can easily fix a problem IF they have the technical info. That is also true at events. Now is the time for all good Porsche owners to have their own little personal technical booklet in the 911. This may be true with your local mechanic. There is nothing to fear but the lack of knowledge. I have a dream that all Porsche owners will have this info. OK, OK, I’ll quit.

Even I will opt for the flatbed home. It is a PITA to try and fix something alongside the road after all weekend at an event.

Guys, the draft paper is on its way. If anyone else wants a copy, please e-mail me.

Best,
Grady

Having just come from a track weekend where my starter solenoid failed in the TX heat, I would suggest having a metric socket set. I had a full set of wrenches but not enough leverage and some wrenches didn't fit. I will be buying a cheap set from HF or so to keep in the car with the tool set.

#1 on any spares list should be a spare fan belt and the tools to change it. Driving without a belt can fry an air cooled engine in a heartbeat.
