Early 911 brake upgrades

Hi Guys.

I have a 1974 911 that I wish to track on the weekends.

Please let me know who makes a nice kit. I wanted to use 993 twin tubo brakes in the front and back, but the racer's group suggested using the C2-Turbo on the rear instead.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

It is a plain 911. So you recommend that I get a set of upgraded struts to make it easier to fit the brakes to?

Thanks.

tons of info here, suggest you search the site and use it as a primer. You will need to buy new struts. Any upgrade that is worth doing won't fit on the early struts unless they were equipped with S-Calipers.

additionally, if you have a stock motor you aren't going to need much in the way of upgrades to track the car. ...at least when you start. Just use good brake fluid, replace your brake lines, use good pads and make sure you have adequate cooling to the brakes.

Thumbs up

There is what I have been installing on track and street 914s & 911s for the last 20 years. There a great low cost upgrade!
The front calipers are ATE 4 pistons and the pad size is just a little smaller than a 930 pad.
The rears are ATE 2 piston with a pad size the same as the front 76-89 911 caliper.
They use standard F&R 911 rotors and fit 15" wheels.
The fronts bolt right on and the rears you have to grind a very small amount off the alum. trailing arm.
If you have the steel trailing they just bolt on.
The brake bias stays the same as orginal.
They work great!
The best thing they only cost $1000.

It's been pointed out, correctly, that the biggest problem is heat and to that end cooling and bigger rotors are the solutions.

Bill- which struts have the 3.5 spacing? I also have a 74, and will do this down the road a bit.

Doc, which rotors does your kit use? SC or carrera? Are the rotors included in the kit, or just calipers?? What is the selection like for different types of pads?

Thanks, Jeff

Hey Jeff,
They can be used with SC or Carrera rotors.
Only the calipers (loaded with street pads) come with the kit.
All types of pads are aval.
Happy Holidays

So they were designed for 24mm rotors, but you think it'll be OK if they're used with 20mm rotors? What thickness rotors were the front calipers designed for?

If they're not from a higher end BMW, they look kind of like Volvo calipers, but not quite...

So what car did the fronts originally come on?

Any S, any Carrera any SC

Unless the '74 has been drasticly modified. An upgrade to stock Carrera fronts will be fine.

Keep in mind the rotors are the heart of any brake upgrade.

'74 uses exactly the same rotors as an '83 SC. If you change the caliper to an A the rotor stays the same and you only gain a little pad area which isn't a big deal and is certainly not needed.

at least w/ the Carrera fronts(caliper and rotor) you get a little bigger rotor, which is all that is needed, especially if you put cooling in, which should have been step 1 any way.

A fair rule of thumb, S/ SC brakes are good for ~200hp and 2200#, the Carrera fronts gets you up to ~ 250hp & 2500#, 930 brakes are good to 250 and 2500#, etc. gaining 500# or 50hp usually moves you up a step in brakes.

Just to nail this down...

Does any S mean any real S, or also include the 2.7L mid-1970s cars that PAG called S? e.g. 1975 911S?

I am updating to 18" Twists on my 82 SC...spacers are HUGE...I want to stick 993 brakes up front....will that combo allow me to go with a more narrow spacer?????

Thanks....
