paint questions
The metallic paint on my SC is original & generally in good shape (some nicks, stone chips, dulling on the engine lid) except for
1/ the roof, where it has thinned out severely over the years, and the previous owner had run the sunroof w/out cables scratching it fairly badly. 2/ the top surface of the front bumper also has some big scrapes from SUV drivers parking-by-braille. 3/ front & rear valences & the sideskirts are very faded. Has anyone had experience with getting areas spot painted? I am considering removing the bumper, valences & possibly sunroof myself then taking the car to a friendly pro for the paint prep & paintwork. The windshield should be replaced as it is quite pitted & old. It seems like the bumper & valences should be easy enough to acceptably match to the existing paint. The entire roof including A-pillars will need to be covered though. I’m hoping to get a pretty acceptable result without paying too much, possibly doing much of the disassembly & reassembly myself. A full repaint is out of the question- I can’t justify spending $8000 on that and though cheaper paintjobs may be available the $5000 paint jobs I’ve seen on other pcars are, IMO, worse than the flawed original paint I have now. Ideally I would do all of this including new windshield for a budget of $1500. Is an approach like this just asking for disaster? My car is in very nice shape- I guess a 9 out of 10 in all areas except the flaws above. It would be good to get the glaring flaws seen to. thanks! |

Over her you would get a better than factory complete paint job for about 3K gbp. Although you would probably have to strip and prep the car yourself.
Metalics are a B'stard to match well. IMO, FWIW, you would do best to totally repaint it. The answer to getting a great job is plenty of prep and also plenty of 2000 grit wetsanding prior to and after the clear coat.

I bet that if you can prep and pull off some parts, use thick string under rubber seals, etc.. that you could get an inexpensive paint job.

Really? Wow. I’ve guess been shocked how bad some northern CA paintjobs I’ve seen have looked. Full repaints that were represented to me (when looking for a 911) as $5,000 jobs with overspray, runs, varying thicknesses, front windshield removed but rear window left in place, painted fender beading seals, many paint chips after only a handful of years. I guess I’m pretty skeptical but on the other hand admit that my metallic paint will be extremely difficult to match. Also a little afraid that a full repaint is really going to look like a repaint causing any future buyer to wonder how bad shape the car was in to warrant repainting it.
![]() Does anyone in the Bay Area have experiences with either a full repaint or a partial spray? Any shop recommendations? |
