Will there be another Porsche Spyder ?
In this day of "Throwback cars of yesteryear" such as Beetle, T-bird, Cobra, Hemi, etc. do you think that Porsche will re-introduce the Spyder namesake ? Porsche has gone to great legal lengths to protect their Carrera tm. The Spyder cars of the 50's were (still are) one helluva piece. The spyder name has not been used much by Porsche since then, save a "Berg Spyder" here and there. If you've noticed, there is a Mitsu Eclipse spyder, an MR-2 spyder, and others. Did Porsche not tm their spyder ? and did this terminology simply slip into public domain ?

If I'm not mistaken, Carerra is nothing more than 'race' in spanish and Porsche was able to trademark this for a car name.
The term 'spyder', on the otherhand, refers the style of a car - ie coupe, cabriolet, spyder, drop-head coupe, etc. I'm pretty sure that the term just refers to an open, minimalist, sporting car. Regards, Andrew M

Porsche already has; it’s the Boxter. The problem (if you can call it that) is a Boxter is a full fledged mid-engine sports car. Now if Porsche were to make a version that weighed 1200# with 3.8, 400 HP, carbon fiber body and minimal everything – that would be a SPYDER.
If you want that level of performance, buy a Carrera GT. My friend in London, who currently is the caretaker of my RS-60 (that I owned for 17 years), has a repica RSK. He, I and others have discussed making a series of replica RS-60, -61, -62 with a lightweight 911 engine (MFI 2.8S). The significant changes from original would have to be the brakes and front suspension. A 911 engine will fit and so will a 914/911 or 915 transmission. Best, Grady
