Broke it - now what?

While replacing my stock MC for a Turbo MC - I broke this little (vent?) off my Master Cylinder reservoir

So the question is - #1 what is it? I can't tell where it goes (even on PET!)-

#2 can I fill and bleed my brakes while I wait for a replacement, then switch it out?

What do you think - it was pretty brittle - came off very easy - and enybody that's done this before - it's a pretty tight space!

Jeremy

Bentley calls it a vent line for the MC. Pg 470-5

You have to clamp it off when using a pressure bleeder.

Ian

BTW how are you making out with Jeanne?

Jeanne is a biatch - we had 70 mile an hour gusts at my house - 55 mph sustained. Lost some screens - the sailboat has been rocking (tied up outside) but pretty minor in the scheme of things - I have lived in Florida for 15 years - Never evacuated until this year and Jeanne was probably the strongest one here so far!

Thanks for the information imcarthur - and thanks for asking.

It's just a vent, don't drive hard till it's replaced. You could also do Jack's trick of stretching a nitrile or latex glove over the end(temporarily) to catch any overflow.

My second home is in Stewart 2mi west of where both Francis and Jeanne came ashore. I lost a garage & freezer full of food w/ Francis and a porch w/ Jeanne. Hope evryone else made out as well

Would that make it an MC condom?

Sorry to hear about the damage, Bill. Jeremy - I'm glad all is well. I am very worried about my friends & customers throughout FL & AL. Some have had damage - roofs, soaked business records etc already.

I know you can buy brass fittings at your FLAPS. Some will thread in and some can be backed with a nut and gasket thru a drilled hole. It would be necessary to get something that is air tight if you want to use a pressure bleeder and clamp off the overflow line.

Come to think of it, you could put a valve in the fitting for that occasion.

Thanks Zeke - that sounds like a great idea - I figured it was a vent - just couldn't run down where it was venting to. I might try and see if I can find a fitting to attach - I rarely use a pressure bleeder - I've had better luck with speedbleeders/traditional bleeding techniques.

It looks like there is plenty of material around so should not be too difficult to thread, make airtight.

Thanks again - This was a bad storm - I just found out one of my offices in lakeland the roof caved in

An alternative to the Motive pressure bleeder is the Mitivac vaccum bleeder.
Though it may or may not work as well, it won't pressurize the MC and a threaded barb will stay in place

Mine broke off too. I put a screw in the hole and sealed it with silicone sealant on the outside. That was 4 years ago and I have had no problems.
