Need CIS help in Long Beach...damsel in distress
Pelicans,
My friends sister has been having some rich-running, driveability issues with her CIS Mercedes. I think its a 560SL...one of the convertible two seaters...I think its an 80(?). Anyway, I looked at the car while we were training in San Diego and went up for a visit (I've spent a LOT of time with my SC CIS so I felt right at home under the hood of the big Benz). Basically, a lot of the connections (WUR heater, coolant temp sensor etc) were either cracked and corroded or simply broken loose. I didn't have my gauges so I could not test the system / control pressure so that is still a big variable. Can anyone with good CIS knowledge be able to help her out with this? She is getting socked at the Benz mechanic (single woman with NO mechanical ability), and they haven't really addressed the problems...especially from what I saw. I know its a bit much to ask, but she is really a sweet girl and I told her I would at least ask. Please PM me if anyone could help. Oh, for P-Car content...my CIS on my 83 SC is running great....good thing with the new freakin' CA smog law....bastards... R/ Dustin |

I think the first thing would be to get all those vacuum lines replaced and connections retightened. Then the usual tests we do here for things like dist, WUR, wires, pressures etc are in order.

Dustin,
Agree with Ronin. Would get ahold of TRE and see if they could look at it or possibly they might know of a good MB person in the area. Word of mouth between shops of this caliber means a lot... they know who does good work and usually do not recommend someone who does not. Joe

I believe the the 560SL started in 1986. In 1980 the 450Sl was here in the US. Two different animals....and both are not for the faint of heart, even for the seasoned DIYer.
You can post a list of problems here: http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/forumdisplay.php3?forumid=18 Or I can do it for you quicker since I'm registered.

All,
Thanks for the responses. Yes, it is a 450SL and the CIS doesn't seem much different that any of the Bosch CIS products. Basically, I think Paul hit it on the head...doesn't need any hard core work, just the routine maintnenance items that have fallen by the way side. It's a series of bad connections, vacum lines and pressures. The car does run (and pretty well) but it just runs rich...loss of power as a result and a really stinky pipe. Of course taking it in is easy enough, but I thought I might be able to save her a few bucks through the Pelican head connection. Thanks! R/ Dustin |
