Black Chrome

I have a turbo with black wheels, logo, windows, etc.

The exhaust tips are aluminum as you know, so I had them painted black with engine block paint. Well, it wore of and looks like *****.

What I would like to know is if anyone can tell me where I can either black chrome them or get them painted black (or colored black) so it will not fade.

You could have them black anodized and that would look good. As many will tell you chrome does not work well on aluminum

Take a look at http://www.caswellplating.com/kits/black_krome.html. If you're not interested in doing it yourself I would believe that someone there can either do it for you or offer help to you.

Sky_King,

Thanks for the tip, but it doesn't say for aluminum.

MB911, will the anodizing take the heat and not melt, chip or crack?

You can powder coat AL. Anodize will take lots of heat. Engine enmel is not the same as exhaust paint, which will also take the heat. If you want a low gloss, you can use bar-b-que paint. Just follow the instuctions and drive the car to cure it.

Wurth withstands up to 1200 degrees F! $9.00 on your site.

And to think that ********* charged me $200 to paint the tips with Rustoleum that melted of in a week!

Thanks Jared. Should have 'em painted for our next run.

Might be a good idea to lightly scuff them up with steel wool, so the paint has a better surface to ahere to..

No porblem. It really isnt all that difficult...

Just remove the tips, strip them down. Jasco paint stripper always works well, (use gloves and have plenty of ventilation)

One stripped, lightly scuff them up with steel wool or 1000 grit sandpaper. Clean the hell out of them with acetone or zxylene.

Once clean, spray a light tack coat, (if possible, put them in the oven at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes) After that, spray each coat and cure in the oven..

Afterwards, polish the hell out of them with Mother's Caranuba wax. This will level out the paint and make them look smooth.

Jasco or any paint stripper: First hot wash the item with plenty of soap so the stripper will apply to surface, not dirt. Expect to lay two coats on. Apply first coat and immediately put item in airtight bag: this will keep the volatile agents from evaporating and keep them working on stripping instead.

Use a body filler scraper or equiv. to remove what you can. Soft wire brush for remainder/corners. Reapply second coat of stripper.

That looks like an excellent product as well. How come the paint guy didn't know about any of this stuff?

In a similar vein....can stainless steel exhaust tips be electroplated black ?

If so, can the tips ( mine are welded-on) be kept on the car during the process? You see so many Lexus' and such with their brand name badges electroplated gold....just wondering.

Gforced, Columbia also has a high temp powder that may be better. Either Columbia or a local powder coater may be able to help you.

Here's the finished product with Wurth black. Cleaned with acetone, smoothed with steel wool and recleaned with acetone and blew dry everything with a compressor.

A few light coats and they looked excellent. I didn't even bother with the wax as the paint is very coarse and looks really cool.
