Ever sold a 911 to be exported out of the US? Feel guilty?

I just sold my '71 911E Targa to a guy named Otto who is exporting the car to Germany. While it's sad to see the car leave sunny, dry California to go to a winter wonderland, I'm glad the car is at least going back to the land from which it came. I still feel guilty though. Here she is with her younger sibling.

Have you ever sold a car to someone who was exporting it, or exported one yourself? Let's see pics of the classics that California has lost forever...

Exported 911

If it weren't for the previous owners willingness to export his car I would be Porscheless in Canada.

I say ship em' if they'll drive em'.

I actually exported (drove) it myself. Up the West coast I was often exporting at nearly 100MPH. Sweet.

Here's a pic of the one that got away.

People in other countries shouldn't be allowed to own Porsches.

Foreign Ownership

I don't actually own it..........I'm only the caretaker of the moment.

Chevys have owners, Porsches have staff and benefactors.

Yeah...I put the poor guy through the 3rd degree, took the cashier's check to Citibank for verification of authenticity, copied down his driver's license info, license plate # of the car he arrived in, you name it!

He personally came to get the car and seemed like a nice, straight-shooting German guy...hope I haven't been duped! In any case I'm glad someone in Germany will get the rust-free Porsche of their dreams.

BTW, the guy saw it at the Ventura show...more proof that the For Sale corral results in sales.

Every week there are several cars on the wharf where my wife works at a shipping company. This week, there was a 356. There have been several 914's and, you wouldn't believe it, about 20 356 Speedster replicas going to Germany. A month ago, there was a MB Gullwing coupe replica. Can you beat that? I've never seen one.

Anyway, they're gettin' quite a few of our cars. I guess the money exchange rate is good for them.

I sold my little '65 912 to a guy in Switzerland. I was very leary at first. I asked for his phone # and spoke to him in Switzerland to make sure where he was from and to kind of "feel" him out.

Turned out he's one of the nicest guys you'd want to meet.

He paid via Paypal right away and everything went smooth as glass. I did help with the shipping to the dock, all of which he paid for right away.

Be careful, check the dude out as much as you can, speak to him and see what kind of feeling you get.

I bet it all good.

Mike

I stole this one from Connecticut via it's winter home in Florida. I went the easy route & had it shipped door to door.

Your loss . . .

Thumbs up

Even with the hefty exchange I still saved 10K over buying locally - also got what I wanted: color combo, year, and a trip to San Francisco

IF I were to sell my car, I'd probably rather sell it overseas. I'd be less likely to burst into tears should I see it after I sold it...

Nice rig Ian. I was considering a cab too but thought my clients might think I was charging too much if I rolled up in ragtop. Not sure how they feel about a Coupe but... hey it's too late.

Years ago I sold my 1976 911S to an Australian, who exported it for sale down under. I then heard from the new owner, who was tracking the car's provenance and history. We corresponded and have since become "mates." He has kept me informed with text and photos of all his ambitious racing modifications, performed mostly by himself, and the car now looks fabulous, far better than when I had it and better than anything I could have afforded to do at the time. It was my first Porsche and I was overwhelmed by the challenges of the pulled studs and other assorted problems of that vintage. I'm pleased that the car found a great home and owner.

Thanks Jorian

Just a pleasure driver for me. I just rec'd 1 month ago & I've been away a lot so I've only driven around the block. Still sorting out little issues - window washer, auto heat control etc etc.

Nice to see you stole a good one too.

Ian

Pretty funny how the tables have turned...used to be in the 80's everybody was buying German/Euro market cars and importing them to the US. Don't see any of that anymore.

I sold my 1974 targa, minus the engine and transmission, to a guy taking it to Mexico.

Transaction was in person but was a local personal check. I took it to the bank, we used the same one, and had the account check and deposited the check immediately. He didn't pickup the roller for several days, so it was no problem.

I have found out that importing 30 yr old cars and older is releatively easy.

Yep i wouldnt ship untill the bank says absolutely no problems, i guess they are finding them stolen(cashier checks) and we stupid americans are cashing and depositing them only to find three to four months later we had been scammed, the best bet is a money or wire transfer, cost 30 bucks and you dont loose, Kevin
