Gutting side mirrors

Is it possible to gut electric mirrors? The car is a 77 911 Carrera 3.0 and the mirrors are stock.

Thanks,

David

The '87-'89 Clubsport had manual mirrors. I have never taken one apart and I wonder if the works are different, not only electrical stuff without the connections made. I would think (hope?) that there exists a manual setup.

A lightweight manual mirror sounds interesting. I removed my passenger electric mirror and welded up the holes. That thing is heavy!!
I would like to replace the driver mirror with something light that uses the same holes. The electrical on my mirror is not hooked up anyway.

On the Carrera (and SCs) the motors/gearing are an intregal part of the glass/mirror mount.

This would be the holy grail: an original SCRS mirror. They are in fact early VW Golf mirrors, but the foot is specific to Porsche 911 or 944 (actually this is off my Cup 951, but the mirror is the same).
If you find any, take 2 right away, and PM me...

I want to repaint the mirror frame (powdercoat). Does the plastic separate from the metal? I think that light weight mirrors may be a definate advantage but what about the hole for the electric switch on the door? Do you have a cover for that or do you replace the upper door trim? If there was an easy way to go to manual mirrors I would do it.

I got mine apart to a certain extent . You have to carefully pry the mirror from the frame and then you'll see the screws to start the disassembly . I couldn't get the wiring harness pulled thru all of the pieces but they seperated enough to paint and look good when finished ( no paint build up in the seems ) .

Thank you GeorgeK for the information.
I will have to take a field trip to the local wrecking yards.
