Problem with 1970 901 clutch adjustment

I have a 1970 911E with a brand new 1978 3.0, and the original tranny. The engine has about 250 miles on it, and is running great.

Everything works well, including the clutch, until I've been driving for about an hour (which I have done twice since the new engine.) Then, the tranny grinds into reverse, and into 1st after a complete stop. After the car cools off to "room temp" the problem disappears.

This didn't happen with the old engine, and since the clutch had a lot left on it, I didn't replace it or any other clutch/tranny parts. They were all in good shape.

I'm thinking I'll adjust the clutch next time it's warmed up enough to cause the problem, but I thought I'd ask if there is anything I should know about. Is there?

Charlie

Charlie,

Those are classic symptoms of oil on the clutch and/or very polished clutch surfaces.

I have new Swepco tranny oil.

Speaking of oil, Grady, that may be a possibility. The adjusting end under the tranny was covered with oil, and there are no engine oil leaks. There seems to be tranny oil in places it shouldn't be, but I can't find a source of a leak. Where might a tranny leak oil so that it gets on the adjusting nuts and/or on the clutch surfaces?

Also, should I try to re-adjust the new shift coupler?

Charlie,

A common leak is the transmission input shaft seal. If it fails, it lets transmission lube directly into the center of the clutch. The fix is to replace the seal.
Also, always check to not overfill the transmission.

On one of the links listed, I posted a preventative additional fix you should incorporate.

Best,
Grady
