project update 7 "a"

Got the Fuel Cell in. Not much of a project update, (hence the "a")but this is about all Ive had time to do the past 2 months!
And yes, the breather/cannister is the original 72 part.

Next step is to get the oil cooler mounted and fitted into the front bumper, and the fenders and that will complete the outside.

looking good- suggestion: get a small bottle that you can install up high- on the strut brace or the side wall. In that can/bottle-have a lower fitting that can drain back into the tank and an upper fitting that connects to your breather can. you would be surprised at how much fuel will get up into the bottle and drain back. no need doing a road runner impression with a stream of flaming gas everytime you leave a long left hand curve. Do you plan on directing the oil cooler exhaust air out thru the battery boxes or underneath. Though the factory went underneath the chassis on the early cars (right thru the 935) , they smartened up and used the fenderwells on the C2 RSr and later. Why add any additional lift?

Actually the vent line has a check valve in it, no fuel can come up out into the line and into the cannister, just vapors. (so they say!)
My hood has a cutout that fits right into the airbox so the ram air from the front goes throuhg the cooler then into the box and up over the hood. Increases downforce greatly. Alot of newer street/race cars have them now, like the Ford GT40, among many.

good idea when you have the hood cut out- like the GT40's make sure you have a slight lip on the leading edge. You can estimate how high to make it by taping pieces of yarn in front of the opening, then video taping it while at speed. You want to create a negative pressure spot, not positive from the outside air hitting the back wall of the opening and going into the trunk or stalling the inside air trying to get out. Interesting anecdote: I used to run a 935-ish racer in open road races in Mexico. We used to hit 200+ on some of the long scary straights. With a carefully sealed inner box, reduced inlet area, and a top vented hood, there was so much bleed off and underhood pressure left that the hinged hood gas cap cover would stand straight up at any speed over 135 ! We greatly enlarged the cooler exit for subsequent events...
Also if you remember the Chapparal 2F, the nose and hood air openings were actually a front downforce device. no coolers were present in them
