Price check- lower and align an SC?

Just wondering what a reasonable price would be. East coast in Richmond, Va.

Thanks,

An alignment should run about $175-200. Lowering is a different story. If your back has to be lowered more than ~1/2" that you will have to get the rear t-bars re-indexed and that can run a lot of labor. I'd suggest get them close yourself and then bring them in for the fine tuning.

jdowty3 10-11-2004 11:05 AM

A 4 wheel alignment in Dallas runs about $150. The lowering is going to vary due to the time it takes to get it right. The guys I have talked to say you need to adjust, then a short drive to get the suspension settled, then measure, and do it again, and usually again, etc..... Time = $, more time = $$$

hkspwrsche 10-11-2004 11:22 AM

This one will probably need reindexing. I can fit my fist upright between the tire and rear wheel opening and I dont have small paws.

Thanks,

oohhhh ahhhh big H with the monster paws........

My cayenne-height SC was lowered to euro and aligned for $380 all in by a mechanic

$250 for the lowering
$120 for alignment + taxes, etc....

Just had my 930 aligned Friday. Cost: $200 Chicagoland Independent

UK Carrera 10-12-2004 04:30 AM

Just had my Carrera lowered and aligned here in the UK. Was 5-6 hours labour (not sure of the exact time from the invoice as it included some other work). This included re-setting teh spring plates on the torsion bars at the rear.

Ok guys, ignorance is bliss, what's wrong with getting a front end computer alignment at say, Sears, for $59.99????

ChrisBennet 10-12-2004 06:45 AM

If you're going to change the ride height you really should have it corner weighted at the same time.
I get mine aligned by a certain guy at a local tire place for $100. I kept him company for the first few times until I felt comfortable with his work.

UK Carrera do you mean re indexing the torsion bars or actually just adjusting the spring plates?

thnks

UK Carrera 10-13-2004 09:57 AM

Re-indexing the torsion bars.

I just went through the same thing, although I lowered it myself. It wasn't that bad just took a little time and the only thing I have done to a car before that was replace an alternator. My SC was at the US ride height and I lowered it to the Euro height. 25 in rear and 25.5 in front. Measurments are from the ground to fender lip.

I took in to get a 4 wheel alignment and corner balance and the mech told me my ride height was "nuts on". Not too bad for a first timer. The alignment and CB cost about $300. If you have the space and time, you should try and lower it yourself.

How about you PM me your number for an emergency hotline if I give it a try and run into a snag! What part of richmond are you in? Did you use an angle finder, etc..? or just wing it?

Who do you use for a mechanic locally?

911Brian 10-13-2004 10:54 AM

You have a PM!

My lowered before and after

Hi Harold, I responded to your PM.

See my before and after. I didn't go lower the euro and still got a nice result.

Adam,
That's a lot of adjustment. Same as I need. You say the torsion bars were not reindexed in the rear? Can you confirm that with the tech that did the lowering?
thanks,

adamred 10-13-2004 12:58 PM

Sure thing, I'll call him in the morning.

Adam

adamred 10-14-2004 05:32 AM

Hi Harold-
Yes my torsion bars were re-indexed...My guy has been doing them since the SCs came out so for him it goes very quickly but as he just told me you never know what's going to happen when you start taking things apart....

Hey Harold

Congrats on the sale of the car!! I'm assuming you picked up another Porsche??

Way to go.

Take Care
Tom

hkspwrsche 10-14-2004 07:52 AM

Yep. The coupe is gonna be a race car after all. Robert at lufteknic already saw the targa when I picked up some shifter bushings from him Tuesday. It's just so stock that it's still at that huge USA ride hieght (still has a converter, stock wires, intake). Got some work to do to get it set up for me. Sorry I missed ya at the last pca meeting there. Sure I'll see you at the next one!

Thanks,

rcaradimos 11-14-2004 01:15 PM

Adam, tell me what you think,
mesurements:

Center of wheel to arch of fender
F/R 14"
F/L 14"
R/R 13.5"
R/L 13.5"
Ground to arch of fender
F/R 26"
F/L 25.78"
R/R 25"
R/L 24.78"
The drivers side is 1/8 lower front and back from ground to arch, and mesurement from center of wheel to arch, front is 1/2 " higher on both sides over the rear. Curb side it looks like your "after" pic, what are your mesurements? I think my front is about 1/2" to high going off the ground to arch, but right on from center of wheel mesurment.

JoeC 11-14-2004 01:52 PM

Adam,

Who did your work? Mine could use the same thing.
Got a name and number?

Thanks Joe

Does anyone know how much a difference in ride height does body weight make? I mean, if they corner balance it with 225lbs. in the front seat how much higher will the driver's side be when they remove the weight?

I ask because the previous owner of my 911 weighed 300 or so pounds and the driver's side is about an inch higher front and rear. I was just wondering if he had it corner balanced for his weight.

A fresh corner balance is on my list of things to do but I'm not going to do it until I install the new shocks, turbo tie rods and torsion bars.

Who did you go with in the end & how much did it cost you? I badly need lowering & aligned but am thinking getting it close myself would save a ton of cash.

Hi Chris

It's a bit far from you but I had the work done at Francis Tuthill near Banbury.

I would highly recommend them from my experience. Paul Green is a pleasure to deal with.

I had a service done at the same time. Labour total was 8 hours. I think 5 or 6 was for the suspension at £40/hr. This did include a complete geometry check and adjust, along with the ride height setting. To do the rear they had to re-set the spring plates on the torsion bars.

The found the torsion bar covers needed replacing and mentioned that they always weld the nut for the adjustment bolt onto the back of the spring plate so that if any further minor adjustment is required 'it's a 10 minute job' - their words!
