Is Carrera fan housing the same as SC?

Hi folks,

Just wanted to clarify cos I was told that the SC and Carrera's fan housing are similar and interchangeable.

I checked and the part numbers are different but wanted to hear from fellow Pelicans on this. Can I use a SC fan housing on my Carrera with my Carrera alternator and fan? (Afterall I am only changing my housing)

Thks!

'78-79 SC used 226mm fans and housings, '80 on used 245 mm as did Carrera and pre '77 non R versions of the 911.

So the only different ones were the '78-79 SC

Thks Bill!

So I can get an 80 SC fan housing as a replacement for my corroded Carrera fan housing and it would all fit?

So for being duh, but just want to be sure before forking out the moolah.

Thks again

They are the same size but [u]may[/] have different hardware hard points. The part #s are different, Why not check w/the salvage yards for one from your year?

With different part numbers I wouldn't risk it unless I could compare them side by side. If they were so similar that they could be used interchangably then they would probably show up superceded for one part number, but they haven't.

On an SC fan the coil mounts to two bolts protruding around 10 o'clock on the fan housing. I think Carrera housings have these bolts, but am not sure if they're in exactly the same place. Since those bolts have to slide into a slot in the engine shroud, they will have to all line up perfectly.

SCs generaly used a 75A alt, carreras used a 90A. the housings are cut deeper for 90A units. a 90A in a SC housing would hang out an extra inch or so, and the pulleys would not line up.

Hi folks,

Thks for all the feedback. OK, I will stick with the Carrera housing than take the risk with the SC housing.

I am not so concerned if its just the SC coil mounting bolt being the difference, but if the 90A alternator won't fit, then the SC housing is out.

Thks guys!

Do you have a line on a good SC housing? I'm looking for one since mine has some stress cracks.

Yes, if you go ebay, you can see the SC ones being sold for only $275. When I called, they claimed that the SC and Carrera housings are interchangeable.

I almost bought immediately but thought I'd ping the brain power of this forum first. Truly this forum rocks!

I think for $275, its really cheap for a new fan housing. Anyone out there with good deals on Carrera fan housings? I need one!

Cheers

I had three wrong ones sent to me before I found the right one. Two of those sources would not even respond to my calls or emails about returning them and I ended up eBaying them for more than they cost me. Go figure. There's a place in Wilmington, NC called Automotion and they had a few. Steve Timmins ended up having the right one for me. Try those guys. I think I got one for around $100-$150.
