Just bought 73.5 911 but VIN# problem/Help

My wife, yes my wife bid on and won the auction for what looks to be a clean original 1973.5 T. The problem with the VIN is the seller just told me the last # on the VIN on the pink slip being a 2 is a 7 on the car. The seller told me the last owner had it stored for 25 years and off the system for I don't know how long and had to get a new pink slip and entered the wrong VIN #. I think something is fishy and I want to know how to proceed?

If this problem wasn't stated in the ebay ad, I would walk.

Should I report it or request that the seller resolve the issue with the DMV . . . is it even resolveable?

The last digit of the vin for that year indicates the number in the sequence - i.e. last 4 digits are 0642, that would be # 642 of whatever was built in that series. That and 7 and 2 can be mistaken easily if someone is handwriting the number, penmanship is subjective. If it IS this simple, it's probably not a huge thing to get bunged up over.

HOWEVER Failure to properly represent the goods, and any questionable VIN sounds fishy to me. If it were me, I'd want to see some serious history on the whole car.

If you have the VIN, post it along with the chassis number and the engine serial (if you can get 'em...) and I'll look them up in my Redbook and see what matches.

I'd still be awfully wary at this point and be prepared to step away from this one.

Mistakes do happen. How likely would it be for all the numbers to match except the last one? I had a Harley one time that the first two numbers were supposed to be 2A, but on the title it was AA. Have the seller take care of it. I had to go the the Highway Patrol and get some documentation that it wasn't stolen. Then the dmv took care of the rest and I got a correct title.
